  1. So I just figured out my camera had Auto Exposure bracketing and I've my camera for about 9 months.. have any of you other DSLR users used this?
  2. Help me pick some CF memory for the wifeys Canon Rebel XT. Shes got a couple 2 GB cards now, but wants something larger. How important is memory speed? I notice for speed, some companies list a multiplier, like 80X, 133X, 300X, etc. while SanDisk lists like 30 MB / s. Help?
  3. Nikon or Canon (which do you prefer?) for cheap. New is best. Start teaching me folks!
  4. Recommend any good books on photography?
  5. Amazon has a the discontinued Sigmas 24-60/2.8 for $219. The charts looks really good for $200.. If you want an approx. focal length of your kit lens with upgraded optics this may be the way to go.. for cheap. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00...KO/ref=dp_olp_2
  6. From what I have read, shooting in Raw is basically your digital negative. When opening a RAW in Photoshop to "develop" the picture, you have more data to work with opposed to using the cameras compressed jpeg. Ever since I've read up on this and playing with HDR, I've been shooting in RAW. I basically copy the RAW files in a structured directory to my computer. Before I post online or show to someone, I will open up the RAW, develop the photo and then save it as a jpeg in a different directory. I always keep all my RAWs in case I want to develop the photo a different way down the road. Sure RAWs are a little bigger, but you can buy 1TB drives now for like $130 http://www.buy.com/prod/1tb-sata-16mb-high.../206895079.html
  7. I've been chatting with NOFX for awhile on different lenses, since he's in the market for one. It was all in PM's though, so we wanted to bring it here and open it up to anyone else that has questions/opinions on camera lenses. One question that came up is "what's your dream lineup for lenses?" And then a followup question is "how do you get there"? Do you go with intermediate lenses, or just wait and get the best when you can? So if you have any questions about lenses, ask away! Some of us have probably been where you're at, and we're all learning. Don't be afraid to ask anything!
  8. Has anyone heard of this? Supposedly if you have an out of warranty Canon camera (SD series) working or not you can trade it in to Canon for an upgraded (refurbished) unit, most notably the Canon EOS Rebel XT for $275 with a kit lens. I have the link bookmarked at home with the specifics so if I remember I'll post the details. From searching Google I've found the phone number to call to inquire (as Canon doesn't actively advertise this deal) 866-443-8002. I'm hoping I can take advantage of this deal here in Canada because ever since I got my SD600 I've wanted a DSLR
  9. I thought this forum got nixed back when the forums got cleaned up. Just found it again recently, was just hidden...cool... Ok, a couple of my daughter. We like to do little "photo shoots" for our daughters at a minimum of each birthday but usually we've done them every 3 months. Basically we hang a sheet on the wall for the backdrop and then just shoot some pictures. I use photoshop quite a bit for the PP as well.
  10. Its a Nikon...hope you people are Nikon friendly. Cause I am a noob. I bought the D40 with two lenses. The 18-55mm and the new 55-200 VR lens (vibration reduction). Gotta sweet deal on it with a extra 4 hour battery and 5 year warranty (which isn't bad at all). Plus 4 uv and polar type filters...still noobish here. Anyway. Here is where I got some recommendation. Ken Rockwell is a well known photographer and here is what he said about it http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm also here is his dedicated page to the D40 http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm Any tips or computer programs (advice) are greatly welcomed. I would also like to get one of those portable hard drives that you can put your SD card into and it will download all your picks onto it. Anyone know if those are worth the money? I don't wanna lug around my laptop for that. Plus backing up my photos. Tips on that I really need.
  11. Anyone here use Blender for 3D rendering stuff? I've been using it for a while, and while I'm definitely no expert, I have done some pretty neat stuff. I'm trying to model a dental handpiece that is made of brushed aluminum. Using the newest version (2.45) I got the material/texture looking perfect and want to integrate it with another scene I have made. The only problem I running into is I use the Yafray renderer for the other scene because it is the easiest way to get Depth of Field in the rendering, but my awesome brushed aluminum material looks like crapola. My options are: 1. figure out how to fix my material for yafray renderer (big pain in the butt) 2. figure out how to get depth of field rendering through blender's internal renderer. (larger pain in the butt) I know people have been able to get depth of field through blender's renderer before using compositing nodes, but I can't seem to get them to work, mostly because I don't understand the whole z-buffer thing I think. If anyone has a better knowledge of this than I do, please help! I've been searching all over the interwebz, and have read more forum posts than I care to admit, but can't find a decent depth of field tutorial for the internal blender render engine that uses the compositing nodes. Thanks guys!
  12. Anyone who dabbles in PS interested in making sprays? Since K-Wix no longer makes any... wondering if anyone else would want to take over...

  16. I love it, personally. And I'm always looking for interesting macro shots other people have taken. Do any of you have some? Or know of some good macro shots online? Here's one I took of a jumping spider last weekend. It's very amateur-ish, but kinda cool considering these things are about the size of a ballpoint pen tip:
  17. After a bunch of research, I bought a Canon Rebel XTi with the kit lens and a 75-300 zoom lens. I don't really know what I'm doing yet, but the pictures look awesome to me so far, and it's a LOT of fun. http://www.flickr.com/photos/number_five Comments and critiques? I know these could be way better. My next goal is to learn about f-stops and more interesting framing.
  18. Here is an ambigram of my name. I made a flash file of it rotating 180 degrees to show that it can be read perfectly upside down, aswell. But, I don't know how to make GIFs, and I'd like this to be made into one. I went back into flash and saved the file as .gif and it made a gif file, but it's just black when I open it. I went on the interweb and it says I need a gif-making program that costs like 25 dollars. And if anyone has the resources in their hands to make GIFs right now, I'm sure this wouldn't take long. 22. For this project we had to take a picture of our study buddy, then juxtapose it with a word. I went with "American Idle", and promoted his idleness. The process was taken from a Computer Arts tutorial. I just pushed it a little further. Computer Arts magazine is great exposure of digital illustration, and I find it all inspiring. American Idle
  23. C&C welcome. I'm putting links as the images are large. http://www.toddandkaren.net/temp/lainey/dresssit_rev1.jpg http://www.toddandkaren.net/temp/lainey/jacket_rev2.jpg
  24. I'm in a intro to computer imagery class, and for the last month we have been working in Illustrator. I chose New Orleans as the destination then we had to grab source images and compose the poster. We also traced from roughs and sketches. I had to sketch the trumpet player and the trumpet because the photos I had wern't at the angle I wanted. So in critique today that came up, so I may work on that on the weekend. Apart from that and a few out of place anchor points its ok. Streets with Soul
