AMD Quad Cores

Recommended Posts

Anyone have one? Anyone have any ideas about them? I am looking to do a new build soon (tax refund just came in :) ), and I have in the past been an AMD kinda guy. I know the Intel Quads have been out for a while, but I see the AMDs are as well now, and I was wondering if anyone knew how they were stacking up?

I am an original amd/ati fanboy but they just don't stand in the same room with Intel right now. I do not advise amd/ati to anyone. If you can't afford the top of th line intel/nvidia set-up get a lower end one so you can upgrade down the road a little. The prices for intel are fairly inexpensive as it is, so there is really no reason to go AMD unless you already have an AM2+ board and just want to upgrade the CPU.

If you will post your budget I'll search out the best rig for the $.

I am looking to keep it under 1k for sure. I have all of the accessories, just need the rig itself. I can figure out case, hds, mem, etc, I just havent looked at CPU / GPUs in a while. I also tend to gravitate towards ASUS mobos, but if you have a better recommendation I am all ears.

Thanks

You can do what mine is: giga series 780g hybrid with additional 3650 card, and you can put in a phenom cpu...just make sure you do the 50's so I would say do the 9750 for best bang for the buck.

I am sure cujo will have something to say on this, but I put in what he mostly has said to me when we have talked in the past regarding the same issue.

amd still has the platform advantage so it really depends on what you'll be primarily doing. for a media pc amd hands down right now. you can get solid integrated video and playback and even do a little gaming. if you'll be adding a 3d party gfx card anyways then go intel for sure.

I would cut back on the case a tad, up the CPU to this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115043

And I would most likely stick to a power supply in the more known brands like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139006 or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817171024

As far as the video goes, your choice is ok but I would prolly get this one to get the better memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814121227

case suggestion: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811156060 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811112099

RAM suggestion: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220269 (lower cas latency makes up for the slower speed)

Who still uses floppies?

looks fine to me with preachers updates cept for the vid card. he's downgrading you. i've seen a review (i'd find it if you want) that shows the 1gb vs the 512mb 8800gt and there was nothing between them. certainly if you're not using a 24" or larger lcd there is no need for more than 512mb ram. not to mention you had the gts chosen which is clocked higher than the gt he chose for you. btw, i'm referring to your second card choice. definitely don't get the 640mb one.

that hard drive looks expensive even if it is their server class. i'd take a look at the wd6400aaks. it should be cheaper and it's definitely better.

vista business is what you want unless you plan on making home movies or using media centre. even then there is far better software out there for those tasks.

i agree. who uses floppies? i don't even have an internal rom drive at this point. just use an external usb rom drive to install windows and then most of my games are isos or on steam.

as far as the ram, the nvidia 780i likes lower latency vs higher bandwidth so there will be very little difference between ddr2 800 at 4-4-4 or ddr2 1066 at 5-5-5. the slight edge would go to the higher speed ram though. when i build my media centre i intend on using my ddr2 800 in my current system and probably getting the ocz ram you're looking at. either that or gskill.

notes Cujo didn't shoot down all my choices /me looks outside to see if it's snowing.

haha, well i didn't look at the cases but ya your choices were good for the rest. you didn't suggest an ultra psu which is usually what i pick on. i agree with you on the cpu though if overclocking i'd probably bump to the 9450 for the better multi.
