mrX October 28, 2008 Share mrX GC Alumni October 28, 2008 So I found out today that an attorney in my office building went to Germany for a week to buy a car from the manufacturer (not sure what yet). Apparently this was arranged by a local dealership. They go to the country where the car is made, drive it around a few days, then have it shipped back to the States. The awkward part - it's supposedly cheaper than buying the same car here by a few grand. Not a lot when talking about luxury cars, but nothing to sneeze at, and certainly worth the "hassle" of a free trip to Europe. Anyone heard of this? This isn't the case for the most part - they still have to meet US emission standards to be legally imported and driven in the States. That is the main reason that the US doesn't get the "better models" (if there even are any in some cases) in the first place. BMW has a great European Delivery program with included factory tours, etc. I'm pretty sure the other major manufacturers (Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, etc.) do as well. I might have been thinking about safety standards, not emission. I can't remember which to be honest, I just know there is some aspect about which the US is more strict. Leveller October 28, 2008 Share Leveller Member October 28, 2008 I know BMW and Porsche offer this service, and a few folks locally in the BMW owners club have done so. It's not a huge saving as you say, but if it makes for a great reason to make a trip to Europe and drive some of the best roads in the world (Southern Germany has some outstandingly beautiful areas and great driving roads). It's a completely US spec. vehicle, just delivered in Germany, if you buy a Z4 or X5 from BMW you would have to collect them from the plant in Spartanburg, NC (even if you were from Europe buying one and wanted the "plant pickup"), but if it's any of the other models it would be European delivery to collect form the plant, it's purely where they finish the manufacturing process.
