Namecheap ddos causing outages

FYI.

http://techcrunch.com/2014/02/20/namecheap-ddos/

Namecheap is a dns provider that we use. DNS is what translates a name like gamerscoalition.com into an ip like 72.44.89.116

If dns goes down no website will be accessible because computers will not know the internet route to get to them.

The article above mentions the attack is over 100gbps which is very rare and deadly. The largest attack ever seen was 400gbps. These large attacks are going to happen more frequently because of a new ddos method discovered in the last year called amplification. Read about it here:

So no, we are not having server issues. The foundation of the internet is. Strap yourselves in

Last night there was an attack on an upstream node of our web provider. That somehow mucked up DNS enough that I was locked out for about two hours. The crazy thing is is that during this, and actually still now, a tracert from my end to our web server shows that it resolves to some random internet provider. Not our server and not our actual provider. access is fine though thankfully. I imagine a dns flush myside and things will clear on that end.

Strange strange days...
