  8. on the teacher it depends.....if the teacher uses the actual word in front of the principal then yes, she is breaking the exact seem rule she is asked to enforce, but if the teacher merely states the s- word etc. She isn't using the offending language, she is using an acronym or a euphemism to describe the word used which is not the same thing. If I was a student telling on another student and I tell the teacher they said the s-word.....would probably not get into trouble, but if I actually said s**t that would be different. on the cop......it isn't a fair example. A cop chasing the speeder is doing so, because it is against the law to actually speed and puts innocent lives are in danger. It is not against the law to swear, nor are you putting lives in danger. It is merely in poor taste in some settings. Including gameplay in this server, but I am not speeding, and they shouldn't be able to pull me over because I thought about speeding or inferred to the passengers that I want to speed. I am not trying to split hairs. I am making a distinction. If I had a way of spelling F backwards and then spelled the F-word, I would be splitting hairs, but technically not be swearing, because a reverse F is not an english letter. I know thats a stretch... a technicality of sorts, but when I throw out acronyms or euphemisms I am not actually attempting to spell or say an offensive word. I am refraining from any attempt to type or spell the word out or directly say or spell the offensive word. I am not saying that its OK to insult someone using ancronyms etc that falls under different rules and if you took the ancronyms out, that person would still be a jerk and maybe deserve a kick etc. I am merely saying that an occasional inference in a game can be quite entertaining and humorous at times if it is not directed at a person as an insult. As you said we are adults here and a little humor without, actually using the words can be quite funny at times if there is no malevolence intended.
  9. I mean no direspect, but I found this reply amusing from a player with the name "Jerkoff", which has a multiple implications..............................
  10. Ok, I understand what people are saying, but in some cases we are mixing two different rules here. The examples A and B Mavc gave about are an expample of what I am talking about. In example A the person is personally attacking another player and forget the implications.....he's attacking another player even if he wasn't being cute about the language, that still violates the rule about respecting other players. The reason the guy in example A is getting kicked is because he's being a jerk to another player and personally insulting them. The person in example B is not attacking another person he's making a general statement about the gameplay. I will give an example of what happened to me last week and what started me on this silly quest. I was playing in the server the round had ended and a new one had begun. It was a very close and competitive game and the tensions were high. At the beginning of the round as a result of a server glitch and not a vote or a action of the admins the teams scrambled and the second I noticed I typed in the all chat WT*. I was not angry w/ anyone, I was not talking to a person at all, I was more or less thinking out loud, about what just happened to this game. I got a warning 1 of 3 from an admin. I immediately said what is that for? They replied no swearing in the server. I said I didn't swear in the server. They said I don't allow that acronym. I said that is the stupidist thing I have ever heard, we cant type letters that form no words. Everyone knows what that means. I said I know thats why I said the letters, because I know what they mean, but I didn't want to use vulgar language. I meant no disrespect to the admin even though I got a little heated, I play w/ that person all the time and they are fun to play with and meant no disrespect, but I thought that was a ridiculous (at the time) the notion that we ban the use of letters that don't form words. One final note. This thread has about 30 replies in it as of this writing. In those replies, not a single person spelled out the acronyms or said the words the acronyms or euphemisms represent. If they had, they would have probably got in some trouble. However in most every thread someone gave several examples of acronyms and euphemisms over and over and not one person complained, warned, or banned a person for using those foul letters etc. Does anyone else see a little hipocracy here?? It's perfectly acceptable to use them in a discussion on this forum, but using the exact thing in a game chat is a no,no. The reason no one complained or got in trouble is because they didn't actually swear, they found a way to convey their thoughts in a way as to not use vulgar language, therefore no one was really offended, even though we know what those things meant.
  11. I think most people have played with me on the server and would say that generally I am a pretty nice person and that I don't dry to skirt the rules or push any envelopes or insult anyone. What I am saying is quite simple. A person that uses an acronym is not using the word. If the person was in a trial and about to be executed and you asked did he swear, you would say no, but he used a word that represents a swear, but is that the same as the swear, well no, but we knew what he meant by it. Yes I realize that, but did he use the word. After him hawing around you would have to come down eventually to the FACT that he didn't swear. If I gave a picture of turkey sandwich and I say doesn't that look good and you say yeah, then I say well eat it then. you would say, but thats just a picture of a sanwich, and I said, but that picture represents one and its just the same thing right. I mean the picture put that thought of the realy turkey sandwich in your head and that the same as a turkey sandwich. A person using a euphemism is trying NOT to be vulgar, hence the acronym. This is my only point. The rules say no swearing, not no thought crime. and again if you are using them for hateful intentions towards another player it falls under different rules and the language is almost irrelevant.
  12. Hey Chick - You just used 3 acronyms (some of them twice) in your post and no one banned you, kicked you, or even acknowledged that you used them........why.......cause you didn't type a single offensive word. You used an inference represented by letters, to make your point. If I where to say dag nabbit, most people would realize that I really want to say something else, but out of consideration for others who may be offended, I censor myself to a more appropriate term...................and that is what the acronyms are for.......so you use letters instead of swear words or words that are in poor taste. I don't believe that if someone does that in game, especially a competitive one, if someone spouts out a couple of letters, blowing off some steam or joking around a bit, its not swearing, you are merely make an inference to a word that is only implied not spoken or typed and shouldn't be held in the same contempt as if you did say those words, but I have noticed people are being treated a little harshly for a LETTER not a word. Example - the other day I was playing on the server, there were no admins in the game and new person game in and used the "F" word. I kindly said to him that we can't swear in the server and expecailly don't use any F-bombs. Now we all know what F-bomb stands for yet no one gave me a warning or a time out for saying "f-bomb". Why......cause I used a euphemism for another word without using the harsh language and it wasn't a problem and people are doing the EXACT same thing when they throw a letter out there intead of using harsh language. Now if you are using those acronyms in a hateful way toward another player to humilate etc. Thats a totally different discussion. Now you dealing w/ no racism, disrespect other players etc. rule which is also in the server rules and a totally different situation.
  13. In my opinion, this clause alone should make players hesitant to use swear words. And yes, I understand swear words can be used lightly and jokingly, but this is L4D. This is not the community where free speech should be allowed. So, rather then wasting our time and effort on unreasonable demands we should focus our attention to more obtainable goals, such as increasing jockey spawns to 11. Come on, admins. What are you afraid of. Give us 11 jockeys! Edit: More on the point, acronym thing is just a loophole. Socks, the clause applies to swearing. A letter is not swearing nor it is a loophole. It is an expression used that represents a word that is poor taste, but NOT used. A letter is not a word, it is a letter, it may represent many things including swear words, but it is not in fact a swear word, this is my whole point.

    I accept your challenge sir
  15. I totally agree with what you just said Jackie. My only point is the rules saying "no swearing" and I totally agree w/ that policy and think it is a good one, but letters that do not form words are in fact not words. We know that certain individual letters may represent a euphemism for certain words that are coarse and thats why someone would use them so as not to be overtly offensive. Such as using the term A-hole. I just think its a little silly to hold individual letters in contempt. Thats why one would use them instead of the offensive language. I realize the "F" word is considered to be more offensive than the "A" word, but if I was in a game and just got killed and I said "aawww F, I got killed"(the letter not the word) or if I said "thats trucked up" would that be considered offensive language........probably not. In the second example I didn't even use a word that started with the same letter as the word, but people would know what I was getting at. I can understand if someone gets a warning or kick if they are directing at someone in a hateful manner. That would certainly fall under the rule of not being disrespectful to others. I have also looked in a whole bunch of threads and found similar euphemisms to the ones we are discussing right now and no one is getting upset about it or saying how offended they are about those acronyms or euphemisms. So why do we give so much attention to an acronym with no context. All I am trying to say is that you and I in this thread have used the terms A** and F*** to have a converstation about this topic. Everyone knows what we mean, but we are not saying the word and I would harbor a guess no one was probably offended. We are merely having a polite conversation. In game that sometimes happens as well, and by using an acronym or letter to voice a strong emotion or for a little tongue in cheek humor as opposed to being truly offensive.
  16. With all do respect Jackie and I do respect your opinion and I am not trying to be a jerk to you, but this is what you posted in another thread. Every once in a while, you get that big a-hole (people who get banned) who wants to rob your store. What do you do? Do you just let them have their way with all your stuff, or do you put a stop to it? Heck yes I'm going with the latter. You'll get those Good Guy Greg members who decide, "Hey, I like this store, and the people who manage it. I'm going to help the guy out and not have this place get robbed", or you might get those Scumbag Steve members who instigate and make matters worse. Kind of a weird example... The term you used was an acronym of sorts. Everyone knows what you meant, but you actually didn't say the word. I was not offended by this and if you ask 10 people they probably knew what you meant and woud not be offended either. You were trying to put a strong point in your post withoug being vulgar. Everyone knows what you meant, without you having to use that word. You felt strongly about what you said and were trying to make a point. So when something crazy or frustrating happens in a game and someone throws letters out there there just trying to show how strong they felt about something without using the actual words. Just sayin'..............
  17. I wish to address something that has been bothering me lately. This topic is regarding the use of acronyms in game usually in the form of text. Here is a copy of the server rules I have found in the forum: Our rules (condensed): - No swearing - No porn sprays - No racism, bigotry, or other disrespectful comments - If you don't have nuthin nice to say, don't say nuthin at all - Don't argue or debate with admins in game. Use our forums, please. - All of the above goes for both voice and text comms in-game (or over Vent) - No Hax. We have zero-tolerance for hacking, auto-aim, etc. - Just because a game is "mature" does not give you leeway to break any of the above rules even if the game characters do or say "stuff" I have had a few heated discussions with a couple of admins regarding acronyms in game. I haven't even been the one using them, but I have a problem w/ admins wanting to warn or kick players for their use. An acronym is "not" a curse word or base or coarse language. The use of them is used as a euphemism so that they are not using bad language in a game and to suggest in my humble opinion that is the equivalent of the actual word is just plain silly. If I wanted to have an outburst and go awe ffffff, but that is as far as I took it, that would not be coarse language. It is a euphemism, I could have been saying french fries, Friday, or Freddy etc, and to be honest I don't think anyone would be offended. Again I am someone who has rarely or ever used coarse language in game or in text, out of respect for the server, players, or community. However to suggest that the use of individual letters that do not form words is offensive is being a little silly. The rules expressly say no swearing and I truly respect that and appreciate it, but to suggest that letters that don't form words is the same as cursing is not being realistic. I would be much more offended by one player putting down another player to be much more offensive and yet that happens all of the time. If I say my wife and I are gonna shake the walls in our bedroom tonight, everyone knows what I mean, but I could just be hanging up pictures. I am just trying to be cute, without being vulgar and I don't "think" anyone would be offended by that statement. I am making a euphemism, not expressly saying anything base or coarse...... a sort of acronym. Any feedback on this subject would be appreciated. I believe the rules we have are appropriate, but to keep nit-picking and extending things out to such an extreme level can make it difficult to enjoy the game and we are all here to have a little fun and blow off some steam and a little suggestive humor can go a long way. Thanks Zero.
