Thanks Lunk, but we just went w/ insurance. The crack was pretty bad and I pheared some damage to the underbelly (linkage/radiator/etc).
Fat, you are right in a way. I have always respected the role of the big trucks in our economy. EVERYTHING we use was brought to us by a truck. Also, I have always been the type to let the poor rig in front of me when they wanna change lanes (I always get the trucker "thank you light blink") because I know that they are doing their job when they are driving and I wouldnt want that job!
I know the term "alligators or gators", but
does NOT always work.
The wife was not hit by a freshly thrown tread. She was making a lane change from behind a rig (who was driving in the passing lane even the next 2 lanes were open) and checking her blind spot as she merged into the next lane. She only had a split second to react to the tread in the road, so there was nothing that a reasonable driver could have done in this situation. She hit a huge tread right in the middle lane of the loop in Dallas.
Regarding the money savings to us for the unsafe practices of many freight carriers...well the $500 that we will pay cash tomorrow negates that savings to US for this year. But I would hope that most people would put their safety and the safety of their families before a few cents savings on laundry detergent.
Many carriers run safe trucks and still make a profit. Many freighters, however, do NOT run safe trucks and that is not fair to the american motorist OR even to their own drivers who are made to drive unsafe rigs.
