Any suggestions out there for someone starting to work out. I've played soccer most of my life and been in decent shape, but haven't played for a couple years and i'm little lost. (Just bought an elipitcal)When you guys started working out, did you do 2 reps of 10 minutes, 1 20 min rep? Did you break it up? I'm hoping to be able to move the couples days after my first work out.

Its important to take it easy on the first few work outs. There was a time when I hadnt trained for a while and I came back really motivated to workout hard - and that motivation outpowered my body's capability to workout and recover - so I ended up getting injured. Therefore I'd recommend you start with 2x10minute reps.

Its important that you have a good long stretch and warm up before you train. If you havent trained for a couple of years then you would have lost a lot of flexibility. The loss of flexibility will make you more prone to injuring yourself - which would delay you fitness regime even more <_<

So use the first couple to just see where your at and take it from there. Start pushing yourself past your threshold next week or when you feel ready. Good luck

Yes -- take the first few workouts SLOW. I remember when I first began working out again, I tried to do too much at once and started getting really dizzy. Just have to be careful in the beginning.

And secondly, concentrate on making workouts part of your routine. If you can get regular for 2-3 weeks, you'll be golden.

I like the 2x10minute workouts for beginning. with a good stretch before AND after.

I use to run cross country, and I would be so sore if I didnt stretch afterwards.

Or you can do a cool down. Usually half your pace you were going during your workout.. just for like 3 minutes or so.

Just to get your heartrate back to normal and your breathing is okay.

Remember:

In thru your nose, out thru your mouth. It keeps your mouth from drying up. It took me awhile to do it without thinking about breathing, but it helps from feeling tired.

like zester said, a good suggestion is to make sure to stretch afterwards as well. a stretch after you work out will give you the best results because of the 'warmed up' nature of the muscles. when you do it cold at the start, be careful and dont push it.

what your goal is will depend on if you are looking to strengthen your heart or burn fat. i try and stay on the eliptical atleast 20 minutes every time i get on it. a good cartio workout can be done every day or two, depending what else you are looking to do in your workout.

Hopped on it today for about 25 min went alittle over a mile and burned 176 calories. Which isn't that bad for jumping on it for the first time. I'm just looking to get into better shape, get the heart going and hopefully drop a couple pounds.

take it easy schmake it easy....if you want results, you gotta sweat. Each time you get on there do more than you did last time, either harder or longer, moderate steps at a time until you're sweating and you can feel your pounding heart........you'll survive.

If you can't tell you worked out the day before by the way your body feels, I'd say you did too little. If you can feel that tightness/soreness....well, good. Rest that day and go back at it the next. Don't wait until you're completely not sore anymore either...that might take a week. You're safe on your eliptical. Work dem buns!

i think i just heard duke hit the floor.

ROFL!!

Surprising i'm not that sore today, i'm gonna push it alittle more today. I did some good streching before and after the workout. Plus i hopped on it for a couple 5 minute walks last night when i was feeling tight.
