Opty 175 - $451-499 Opty 170 - $394-415 Looks like the 170 is the choice at the moment. We'll see. OC either of these chips to 2.6 (no major feat with these) and you have a $400 - 4800+ (abt $650 rt now) -- MoBo-- Asus a8n32 sli - +/-$200 ( true pcix16x2, not 8+8) - This MoBo has been getting great reviews, but still getting several little bugs reported. Dfi Lanparty sli dr - +/- $195 - Great ratings , but sli is 8+8 in dual mode. So far, looks like the Asus is the choice, but Im hoping that VERY soon another 16+16 board will hit the market. -- RAM -- ( all 2GB kits) Mushkin Xtreme Perf DDR500(PC4000) - $200 after rebate - Note: there is another Mush Xtreme 2bg kit for about $330. Why som much $ diff? Optional Heatpipe cooler from Asus - $?? - looks like a good thing to have, may be able to use stock cpu cooler instead then. -- VIDEO -- Leadtek 7800gt 450/1050 OCd. - $289 - Mostly good reviews, my 6600gt Leadtek I love. AND the price! 2nd card to be added later (in a year?) to maintain performance longevity. -- CASES -- Um... HELP!! everything from a case WITH 450 watt power at $60 to - cases at $140 PLUS a $125 PSU totalling $265.... woah! Please, help in the areas of Ram and cases/PSUs especially, but ANY other notes/info welcome My original goal was to stay under $1200 but maintain "future-proofing" - not going so well. Cujo February 16, 2006 Share Cujo Member February 16, 2006 definately dfi for ocing. ram go with the ocz you mentioned, mushkin redline xp4000 is also good. basically refer to that link i gave before with the different rams and how high they oc. for case taht's pretty much your call but don't skimp too much. look for 120mm fans for optimum cooling and quietness. you want to spend at least $100 on a powersupply. enermax liberty is probably your best choice. 500w should do you fine. alternatively, an antec of at least 480 should be good as well. I wanted a modular one and with it only costing like $20 more I went for the 600. First, Thanks again. Not liking the asus for OC? It seems to have done ok in that department. The probs Ive been finding are things like not compatible with some of Antecs PSUs, picky bios, and some RMAs. Have seen some "inferences" about needing a certain DL to run an Opty on it, but nothing concrete yet. The DFI of course is good across the board. The only thing it lacks in comparison is the 16x16 pci. I think those RAM links I supplied above are actually direct links from the ram-link you gave me. Oh, and "the OCZ you mentioned"? I listed 3 Any one in particular. The first too had larger and higher timing numbers. The Platinum looked good but EXPENSIVE! Havent been able to find a price on the redline 3200 yet ( and its only 3200) Looks like Im out a good $200 for case/psu no matter what then. Thanx to both of you. I just dont know enough about this stuff to determine. For example, the SLI-D and the UT SLI-DR look EXACTLY the same by the specs listed, but theres a $10 diff. The only major diff I can find between all of them is the # of PCI slots. One of these being PCI-Express x4. What is that and why would you want it? Thats the only diff I see between SLI-DR and UT-SLI-DR Expert is the addition of the PCI-x4... and it costs $1.99 more? Crucial Ballistix z503 obviously pwns the world there. Of course, that may be why Im finding it with a $350 price tag on it Actually, those ram links I gave in the first post ARE the same links that your page goes to if you click on any one of the PCs listed. Something I found interesting is that once you go about halfway down out of the baliistix zone, most of the rams are running 2.6-2.8v, which seems to be about stock voltage. There isnt a single ram I can find there passing 2.8 EXCEPT the ballistix now that I look closer. So its the Mhz and timings that cause the effect, not so much pushing the voltage. Look around for reviews/comments concerning 1- cooling /airflow ( enough fans etc) 2- working room ( The board may fit but do you need a prybar ?) That case looks a little tight ( mentioned in review also) and the PSU support looks like just a little tab on the sidewall. Looks very well ventiallted tho. Looks good for the price to me. BTW, yeah I was reading your setup the other day. Money isnt the concern huh? Well, the night I was gonna order my first part I got laid off, wanna send some parts my way? Cujo February 22, 2006 Share Cujo Member February 22, 2006 laz, armor is an awesome case. i have the aluminum one which is half the weight of the steel one (~15lbs vs ~30lbs). i have absolutely no complaints or issues with mine. the p180 is also excellent but heavy like the steel armor. the tsunami is nice but small to work in. frog, you're really confusing. you're spending a grand on a cpu and then getting a $63 case and using a half-a$$ed power supply? your parts just don't match up. All those crazy-overclockin nutz over at DFI swear by it. Cujo, yeah I think I fell in love with that Thermaltake armor case. Its a LITTLE bit pricey ( compared to cheap ones, its CHEAP compared to the expensive ones!), but lots of room and looks like it would cool a small summer cottage. This is my first 100% self built sys, so I know there will be a few things I can chalk up to lack of experience. My order hasnt been processed yet so i have time to change my case, power supply though I can go to Fry's and look around or is there a preticular brand/wattage you guys already recommend?
