Bubblegum Bandit August 6, 2006 Share Bubblegum Bandit Member August 6, 2006 That thing is crazy huge. I've followed it a bit (considering my line of work). There was a good show about it on Discovery. It was about how they were building it, why the are building, etc.
pavid August 6, 2006 Share pavid Member August 6, 2006 I saw that Discovery show too, Bub. It was both amazing and apalling how many people were being displaced by the filling of the dam. So too was it amazing how the Chinese officials ignored the effects of silt deposition on the potential usefulness of the dam.
Tek-Almighty August 6, 2006 Share Tek-Almighty Member August 6, 2006 Dams = mixed blessings... help control flooding, destroy habitat, displace people provide water in dry areas, decimate downstream ecosystems provide recreation, block silt and nutrients from moving downstream... list goes on... 3 gorges has been something to follow for past several years, tho'

shep48 August 7, 2006 Author Share shep48 Member August 7, 2006 The amount of power generated by the dam in 2009 was originally anticipated to supply about 10% of China's electricity needs, but with China's rapidly growing economy it is only projected to produce approximately 3% at the end of 2006[5]. Over 80% of the country's power is currently produced by coal. Opposition is mainly due to concerns about the future of over a million people who will be displaced by the rising waters[2], the loss of many valuable archaeological and cultural sites, as well as the effects on the environment. imagine having a house in your family for 4000 years and now its 200 ft under water....
