[VI]ROosTEr April 18, 2003 Share [VI]ROosTEr Member April 18, 2003 Anybody recommend an add-on TV tuner? I'm going to get one soon, and I was wondering if anyone had some firsthand knowledge of the best one. I am running a 9700 Pro, so I don't want a new graphics card, just the tuner. ConGregation April 18, 2003 Share ConGregation Member April 18, 2003 Here is a link to an article on Toms Hardware. But its three years old Basically the sky's the limit. They even have HDTV cards but be careful cause not all HD is the same. I just wanted a cheap one I could attach a VCR to if I wanted. I got the ATI TV Wonder. Has stereo and works pretty decent. Only $30 on ebay.
Gond April 18, 2003 Share Gond Member April 18, 2003 I've used the all-in-wonder 128 pro before and it worked fine as a TV. It really depends on what you are looking for...you probably don't want to replace your 9700 with an AIW 9700. I had a buddy a while back who had a tv tuner that hooked up outside the PC. It had a better picture but it turned the monitor into a tv so when you watched you didn't have access to the computer. Not what most people are looking for. I currently have a Dazzle 150 for capture. It does not do tv tuning persay but if I hooked a cable box or satelite box to it I could watch TV on the PC. I know that isn't much help...Do you intend to capture video? If so then looking for a higher end tuner card would be smart...course then you also probably want AGP and the AIW 9700. If you only want to watch I would think any cheap PCI card would work fine. Here is a decent example and cheap...ATI TV Wonder VE TV Wonder VE

[VI]ROosTEr April 18, 2003 Author Share [VI]ROosTEr Member April 18, 2003 Yeah, basically I just want Basic capture ability (I can do some capture with TiVo and software), but basically just want to be able to watch TV on my PC sans cable box. ConGregation April 18, 2003 Share ConGregation Member April 18, 2003 Well it works for that. Works well actually. My cable line isnt the greatest but when its working good I get a great picture. Now dont expect digitized clarity. But full screen still looks good if you back away a bit I usually check the forums during commercials. Or work on something while the game is on and just alt/tab if something interesting happens. Its pretty cool.
dwEEziL April 18, 2003 Share dwEEziL Member April 18, 2003 But you are saying if you want to convert a box to a Tivo type unit, you should get a higher-end one? Any PCI ones that are good by chance?
ConGregation April 18, 2003 Share ConGregation Member April 18, 2003 From what I understand PCI is better than USB due to bandwidth issues. I really wish I could find a recent comparison article. But I know hauppage makes some really good tuners.
[VI]ROosTEr April 19, 2003 Author Share [VI]ROosTEr Member April 19, 2003 I am pretty sure viewsonic makes some really high end tuners, but I am not sure how much you ae wanting to spend Dweez. Also, I don't think any of them are PCI solutions.
