freakin do something about it. tropolis is always full with downloader's and admins do nothing to solve this for the people that have the map. didnt you guys say you were going to ban for this.

also, could you kindly make sure that the files page has the maps that are being played at the time, i, on two different occasions in the last week have had to search the web for a map. its a pain in the butt and a real hassle

My opinion? If you have the server.cfg set to to allow ingame downloads, then you have no right to complain about it or ban for it. It is as simple as changing a 1 to a 0. I am all for disabling ingame downloads. I mean, I can sit there for 12 minutes downloading a map or I can get it in 30 seconds and be back in playing. Seems like a no brainer to me.

I usually leave if I do not have the map, I hate sitting here waiting. And if I really wanted to get it it is much quicker to leave cs and download it from the website, so I agree with Draco, I do not see how it bogs down the server, but then again I just play Cs and leave all the Tech stuff to others.

Yeah if you get enough people d/ling the map the server will jerk a little.

Like when people lag they sit there and then teleport. Thats what happens except to everyone in game. <_<

I like the whole idea of turning off in-game d/l but then no one can use custom sprays. (good thing or not?)

Yes, you can choose to turn off downloading of maps and leave in downloading of sprays. Me? I disabled downloading of sprays client-side long ago. I just got tired of immature punks throwing up their 1337 porn spray. If I want to see that crap, I certainly wouldn't be starting up CS to do it. I think I have had spray downloads disable for about 4 years now.

Great. How about being constructive and naming the maps for us.

dweezil hit it on the head, btw. we'll never ban for people d/l in game.

also, i'm not going to kick people that are d/l because we want them to have the maps...if it's through server, so be it.

if you're really that annoyed, chip in some cash to support the server, get a reserve, and take someone's place next time you want to play.

there are lots of maps on the server that aren't on the files page....maps make it to the files page if they are played once in a while or are in the vote bin...heck, i can't remember the last time those were played.

i'm still a little caught on San's tude, however....all this, the server, the page, provided as a service... and a whiney post like that (no, the word "kindly" doesn't unwitch it)...

Oh yes it can. I remember one night we were playing a lot of custom maps. The admins gave messages on the forum and in game (several messages) asking people to please go to the files page to download them. They even put all the maps into map packs for easy download. Well, most people didn't listen and it lagged the dippity-doo out of the server, 5 people in map, 12 downloading...it was very bad.

For anyone who is interested, here is a link to a good map installer, Agent 55. You run it, browse to the zipped map or map packs, and click go. It will install the maps for you (for about 90% of the zipped files...some are not formatted correctly or something but most work fine).

can downloading ingame really slow down a server? especially the trop server. its got so much bandwith!

If the map is just a bsp, nobody will notice. However, when a map comes with a bunch of graphics, sounds, etc, and clients are continuously finishing and starting new files (thus server is verifying and sending new, etc) you can really tell. Deadlock is a fine example of this...

And San, np man, we just have a LOT of people to please, so we look for insight and help, not just flame.
