Silver-Bullet August 16, 2004 Share Silver-Bullet Member August 16, 2004 "On a serve, if the ball hits the net and goes over it is still in play?" Whadda ya think about that?

dwEEziL August 16, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member August 16, 2004 Oh my gawd (to quote Jaksiel). I can't believe they would make such a change. How long has sand volleyball existed? And how long has it been in the Olympics? Just stupid.
Fatty August 16, 2004 Share Fatty GC Founder August 16, 2004 I also have a question: Do they score no matter if they're serving or not? I think I thought I saw USA win a match when China served last night?
dwEEziL August 16, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member August 16, 2004 Now that is worse than the "Net balls count as valid serves" thing.
Ak2786 August 16, 2004 Share Ak2786 Member August 16, 2004 It's called beach volleyball not sand and the rule is for indoor volleyball also
dwEEziL August 16, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member August 16, 2004 It's called both fruitcake. We played volleyball at the FragFest on sand but...Hmm, I saw no beach.
ConGregation August 16, 2004 Share ConGregation Member August 16, 2004 Yeah, the changes are pretty dramatic. I actually like the one that you score whether you are serving or not. Keeps the games moving while the loser of the point still maintains an advantage since they recieve service. Did they change the winning score? I didn't think it was 25 before. Silver-Bullet August 16, 2004 Author Share Silver-Bullet Member August 16, 2004 Yes, you can score no matter who is serving now. Also, this is all just to keep the games quicker. I read somewhere that the average game was like 40 minutes before these rules

Lunk August 17, 2004 Share Lunk Member August 17, 2004 Did they change the winning score? I didn't think it was 25 before. 25 is the score for indoor volleyball. 21 is the score for "Beach" volleyball. Still have to win by 2 in both. Also, it's called "rally scoring"

No more side-outs. Lunk knows his volleyball.
dwEEziL August 17, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member August 17, 2004 Well, I guess I can see them doing it for time constraint purposes (although, how many other Olympics did not modify it?) but I still think it is too much of a fundamental change (both the net ball and the no side-out one) to the game. Oh well, we'll see how it continues to go.

dwEEziL August 17, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member August 17, 2004 True, it might make it a better game. I just see it shaking things up for a bit (which is not necessarily a bad thing either).
Xterminator August 18, 2004 Share Xterminator Member August 18, 2004 The new rule sucks. I played volleyball in school and i found that current rule of ball hit net on serve doesn't count.
