After Doom 3 and many new games that flaunt superior technology, this fear aint so irrational. I cant remember the last time a game has really just blow me away. Farcry came close but it wasnt anything that much different from the other millions of FPS shooters out there. The last time a game blew my mind was probably Chrono Cross. As for HL2, I hope it has the ALONE feeling you get when you play HL. I didn't like farcry cause it just didnt have a great atmosphere to it.
