[LaW]Maverick January 21, 2010 Share [LaW]Maverick Member January 21, 2010 I got a key today for the Star Trek beta, so I'm going to give it a go. Is anyone else playing?
akaM2 January 21, 2010 Share akaM2 Member January 21, 2010 Is it like SWG/WOW?
[LaW]Maverick January 21, 2010 Author Share [LaW]Maverick Member January 21, 2010 It's an MMO...sounds pretty interesting. It has a completely different mechanic from WoW, that's for sure. You are a starship captain in this thing, basically.
Flitterkill January 21, 2010 Share Flitterkill GC Board Member January 21, 2010 Bit of rough start to the open beta a few days ago. Only a few days left as well. Playing much smoother now. Need to play it a touch more myself before I pronounce any judgment. USS Borealis btw. -Fk
Flitterkill January 22, 2010 Share Flitterkill GC Board Member January 22, 2010 Well, tried to slip in a bit just now between plumbing problems and pizza eating/consumption - they just took the shard down for some patching. I'm liking the space combat; can only imagine what it will be like when I have a "real" ship (and not this Reliant-class starter ship). Unfortunately, performance is a bit choppy when I'm not in the ship, which doesn't make me want to walk around Starbase and check stuff out. Rumor has it may be a historic problem Cryptic has with certain Nvidia setups. Who knows... I'll still plug away at blowing stuff up though. 5 days left for free open beta play. Closes on the 26th. -Fk
JordanRinke January 23, 2010 Share JordanRinke Member January 23, 2010 If any of you are going to give this a try, I will buy a copy and run around with you.
Clueless January 24, 2010 Share Clueless GC Alumni January 24, 2010 I was thinking about the beta, but the free keys involved me signing up with some site which I hate doing if I never plan on returning to it. But on the final release, will there be a monthly fee to play?
Jiffy January 24, 2010 Share Jiffy Member January 24, 2010 there almost has to be. Even if they wanted to have a real economy based on money, it wouldn't sustain it like a monthly fee. whether or not it will be the standard 15 is questionable. I'm more interested to see the upcoming Star Wars MMO.
[LaW]Maverick January 25, 2010 Author Share [LaW]Maverick Member January 25, 2010 Yeah, it has the standard monthly fee. I played through the little introductory part, and I'm not overly impressed. There were several glitches with me walking around the initial star ship I was on, and borg just magically appearing out of no where in endless waves. I mean, give a little transporter shimmer instead of having them just pop in. Character creation was pretty cool, I will say that. The space combat seemed a little wonky to me. I got into it a bit, and getting that perfect broadside was pretty cool, but, from what I understand, a lot of the game focuses on away-missions, and the character based movement and combat was pretty terrible. There were all sorts of collision errors, and it felt very sluggish. I would have preferred something a lot more like Mass Effect for controls, or something along those lines. Maybe I'm being too picky, but I expected a lot out of this game...so I dunno...
Clueless January 25, 2010 Share Clueless GC Alumni January 25, 2010 I don't think I could ever bring myself to pay 15 bucks a month to play a game that I paid full price for...just a principle thing.
JordanRinke January 26, 2010 Share JordanRinke Member January 26, 2010 I collect, collectors edition games so I went ahead and picked up a copy of this. Anyone who will be playing let me know where I need to join to be on the same realm/server etc.

Flitterkill January 26, 2010 Share Flitterkill GC Board Member January 26, 2010 FYI, the open beta ends tonight at 6pm Pacific (10 pm eastern?) As is the case with these things, they intend to end it by blowing it up more or less. Specifically, they are going to let the Klingons rampage throughout Fed space starting at 2pm Pacific. -Fk
Clueless January 26, 2010 Share Clueless GC Alumni January 26, 2010 That would be at least mildly interesting, lol
JordanRinke February 1, 2010 Share JordanRinke Member February 1, 2010 So is anyone playing? I got in the early start at made a ship called the USS Chaos and my player name is Jordan Rinke
Flitterkill February 1, 2010 Share Flitterkill GC Board Member February 1, 2010 Passing for now. $15/month way too steep right now, especially sicne the game was almost unplayable during the ground/fps portions. Space time was fantastic though. That and Dungeons and Dragons Online looks like it will pull me back in as they have tweaked the free to play to be even cheaper (no f2p level caps or slowdowns + adding f2p high level content) And of course Mass Effect 2 (and a myriad of older games...) are waiting for me to have the time to deal with them... -Fk
