Internet problems... again...

So it seems i get connection problems from time to time. I made a post about ping dives a while ago, but those seem to have gone away on their own. This is a whole new problem.

For a couple of days now, when playing L4D i'm just lagging all over the place. Yet my ping doesn't go up. (i check it with net_graph 1)

I'm pretty sure the problem stems from either my router or modem. I've tried playing from another computer linked to the same router and experienced the same problems.

Nothing's really changed though in the last few days as to network settings, except for my father using his tablet to play annoying videos from youtube.

Any ideas on how to fix the problem? Please keep in mind i'm a total computer noob. Use small words.

Edit:

this is what my console logs when joining the server:

First two thoughts:

1) Is Dad rocking the tubes while you are gaming?

2) How old is the router? Cable/DSL modems don't tend to go bad, but wireless routers? Many seem to have a shelf life of two to three years and then start dropping packets, lagging, disconnecting randomly...

No idea what that means. You mean watching youtube movies while i am gaming? Yes but making him stop doesn't seem to help any.

2) How old is the router?

About two years i think.

Assuming a recent windows machine....

1) Start - then at the bottom type cmd - then hit return to bring up a command line window.

2) enter the following: tracert l4d2serverip

Replace l4d2serverip with the actual ip address of our server. You might just have crappy routing to get to our specific server. Clueless has had this for-ev-er connecting to our servers in Chicago.

Post results here

no issues, just that one jump at hop 6 may be causing it. not sure how to force a route change

Actually, that looks all good. The huge jump in ping times is to be expected crossing the pond. No timeouts though, and no big jumps between any of the three pings per location (ie. 10ms 90ms, 14ms - something like that).

Hell, I think he has fewer hops than I have...

I just played one round with minimal problems. Second round the lag came back full power. I guess i just have to wait it out.

So.....no Dude for a while? oh *YAAAY*

P.S. Check your router, modem and network card are up to date with the latest firmware and drivers respectively.

it wouldn't be the drivers since its only with one server in one game, it has to be the route, I could help you tunnel into another server which would change your route, but it'd prolly just cause more lag

Something i've never done is update our router's firmware. Can someone post the steps here? I've done some searching myself but can't find any update for it. Our router's a: D-link wireless n quadband home router DIR-825.

Edit: i played a bit before and it seems to have improved, but still lagging more than it should.

So i've tried joining two other 10v10 servers on L4D2, on which i have roughly the same ping as the gcftw one and my connection was fine. My problem seems to be solely with gcftw...

Any suggestions?

Edit: also i should mention that while in the server my console seems to ignore commands most of the time (like 'ping', or just my binds in general). Could something specific about our system be throwing my Left4Dead2 game files off?

I'm gonna remove all L4D content from my pc and reïnstall.

aaaaand... just like that it's suddenly over again.

It started working again when i turned of the networking on the tablet. I turned it back on again yet it still works, so dunno if it's related.
