Well, my round yesterday didn't go according to plan i couldn't birdie anything... ...I couldn't bogie anything... ...So need less to say i shot a boring par after 18. It was really weird game. But hey the course didn't beat me. :D Then shot another nine which i managed to get three birds and all the rest pars. Couple bangers but nothing too spectular, except i came about 6 inches from acing number 4 the short 200 footer... So close!!! Oh well. ;)

hmmm, a par round is never a bad round, thats for sure! especially in consideration of some of our past outings when we threw worthless tosses the entire time. glad you made it out. julie and i actually went out and played tennis. she's getting better and i think i am gonna get her a private lesson or two (god forbid she let me instruct her, that would be a fight that would last a month, lol).

since i know mag's is still sawing logs i'll fill ya in on frolf ;)

okay, like golf there are individual holes that you play. each hole is normally measured in feet for frolf (as opposed to yards in golf). a normal hole will range from 200 -450 feet. the type of discs you use are very different than a normal frisbee. a frolf disc is typically about 7 or 8 inches across, and is weighted and cut in a specific style for variable types and distances of flight.

for instance, a 'driver' is usually one of your heavier discs because more weight can often equal more distance. these discs are also very aerodynamic for maximum distance. they also have a tendency to fly fairly straight at first, and then die off to the left once the pass maximum height and velocity. a putter, on the other hand, is usually unaerodynamic and flies very straight, but not very far, no matter how hard you throw it. this allows for more accuracy around the hole.

okay, back to the course. each course is different, it may be 9, 18, 21 or 27, or 36 holes. most courses are free, and are placed in a public park. there may even be one in your hometown and you never even realized it (for a list of parks, use mag's link to www.pdga.com and click on course directory, then select 'by state'). courses may sometimes be wide open, where there are few obstacles. other courses may be completely through a forest, demanding super accuracy.

Mag's and I, and most other frolfers, play every hole as a par three. the main idea is to have a nice drive that doesn't clip a tree or end up in a bush. wherever your disc lands, thats where you play it from. at the end of each hole is a metal basket. the base of the basket is about 2 feet in diameter with about a 3 inch lip on it. the middle of the basket has a pole going upwards about 2.5 feet, and chains are draped down from the top. the object is to hit the chains, which knocks the disc down into the basket.

its a GREAT sport. the method for throwing a frisbee golf disc is very different than throwing a regular frisbee. you have to use your entire body, including a multiple step approach, to huck a frolf disc some distance. i can say with some certainty that i can throw a disc regularly about 110 yards, probably the length of a football field from goalpost to goalpost, and occasionally farther (although the disc is more than likely lost at that point). there is a lot of walking involved and a round of 18 typically takes mag and myself about an hour to an hour and a half. if you are interested, visit that website to find a course near you, and to find discs you can usually find somebody in the area that will know a shop. otherwise, sports resale shops carry them sometimes, although the discs are banged-up and overpriced.

happy frolfin! ratch

We used to play Frisbee Golf years ago...course they didn't have the nice disks like today...we used the old beach frisbees.

That is an amazing distance to throw one though...I think I was always lucky to get one to go 20 yards. Nice thing about the game is the lack of equipment...you can ride your bike and carry it all.

You said your able to take steps when throwing...is that only on the drive? We always played you had to keep one foot where the frisbee landed and could pivot, much like basketball, with the other foot.

Here in Cincy we had two courses that I knew of...Winton Woods and a park in Beechmont (forget the name). The only cost was the $3 yearly parking permit. Course this was 15+ years ago so I'm sure much has changed.

for driving, yup, you can take as many steps as you like within the teebox. teeboxes are sometimes pavement, sometimes wood chips, but more often than not simply a little dugout with a 4x4 marking the end of the teebox. the placement of the teeboxes determines the hole, generally, because whatever direction they point you, in addition to the size of the box, limits your ability to toss a disc and avoid obstacles.

you are right though, if you have driven and are on a second shot, your foot generally needs to remain at or near the spot the disc landed. thats why a bad drive (ie. smacking a tree 20 yds off the teebox) can get you into a lot of trouble! and in regard to the distance comment; distance is nice when you can throw accurately, but oftentimes can get you into some really crappy spots too. i have lost a driver into a river, tossed one about 200 yards (due to a wind gust) onto the top of an indoor tennis facility := , and another had plenty of distance but veered right into a murky ditch, never to be seen again. lost another into a river! lol, some discs seem to have a mind of their own.

most of the courses we play are free. i played one a few weeks back that had parking fees for the park but the course itself is free. i don't think you could make too much money out of frolfers b/c they generally are the hippy crowd and as long as there are spots to play for free, paying to play seems pretty much a rip-off. but some of the courses are nice enough that i would drop twenty bucks if i had the whole day to waste and the weather was nice. thats the best thing about frolf though, you could go out and play with one disc (cost 8-10 $) and spend a whole day in the sun having fun and getting good exercise (and plenty of laughs) and it is virtually free.

About the -2 that I shot yesterday... First nine i had four birdies!!!! I birdied one, four, five, six.... Then two bogies, on 3 and 9.. On the second nine birdied one again and bogied 3 again... So i has a fun day just wished i didn't blow it on three both times... I can about six inches from aceing number 4 again though.... :D

If you are going to be so close we have to try and get together.... At least for 18..
