Homer,Mar 15 2004, 12:41 PM] I just looked it up and it does use a modified Q3 engine.

Sweet.

Though I could be wrong.

...I equate the P4 to a turbo 4 cylinder, and the A64 as a V8. But maybe the A64 is a V10 - meaning that the A64 has more piplines and/0r is streamlined better than the P4.

Actually I thought of it a little differently.

Although I think we are both on the right track with these analogies.

Maximum PC had a story about the Athlon XP Barton a couple months back that brought up the processors likeness to engines.

They said the P4 would be better related to a high revving (upwards of 10,000RPM) small Liter v10 (Indy car and the like) that had to hit High RPM's to produce its peak Horsepower and Torque. (the 20 stage pipeline in the p4 becomes much more efficient @ faster Mhz. The more Mhz the better for the P4. That's why the P4 ran like snot when it first came out and was clocked at 1.4Ghz or whatever. Intel built the P4 like that so they could scale up the speed over time)

Meanwhile they (maximum pc) said the Barton based Athlon could be likened to a high Torque low revving American big block V8. It can produce a lot of torque without much Mhz (RPM) and starts to flatline when it hits 5000RPM. (thus the reason why the p4 took a beating from the athlon based cores until the p4 reached 2.0Ghz and higher.)

The Athlon 64 wasnt out when MaximumPC wrote that article, but AMD was trying to change the 64bit core of the Athlon to allow for more Mhz(RPM) and better horsepower and torque numbers (benchmark results).

The Barton doesnt seem to return better benchmark numbers after 2.2Ghz(the return of the added heat wasnt worth the small improvements in speed)

I dont know what kinda engine the Athlon 64 could be compared to, but it's somewhere between an American V8 and an Italian Ferrari engine.

I'm just as surprised as you guys over this.

That's why we need AA and AF benchies to make us all feel better.

heh :P

I was thinking Viper V10 myself. You should have the benchies in about 6 hours.

While I'm waiting, er, I mean working, go ahead and crank that MP chip. ;) I'm curious about 3 things:

1) See how your 9800XT scales on it in 3DMark2001and if you can hit 20k.

2) See how PCMark2002 scales on it.

3) See if it has enough horsepower to overcome the mighty Ti4600!

Give us the full report if you can - stock Barton, o/c Barton, stock MP, o/c MP.

my ram was waiting for me when i got home ! w00t ill install it and play with it for a while of course :P will post back with full CoDbench done. Homer, try reinstalling that bench, Athlon 64's are da bomb dizzle in the cpu world at the moment but no way your beating my 3.5ghz raw mhz speeds like that. me = confuzzled.

-edit- just thought i would share that this geil ram i just opened is sexy. more sexy then the ocz.

*me runs off to play with the sexy stuff*

Homer,Mar 15 2004, 03:45 PM] Maybe you have higher revs, but I think I have more cylinders.  :)

heheh

As long as im running a 426 Hemi or 454 Big Block thats all thats matters. ^_^

I guess the 8.0L V10 Viper Engine would be between the American muscle and European high revving small displacement engines.

I gots that Mobile 2500+ in a SFF Shuttle right now.

Im gonna overclock it in there.

I can still throw in the 9800XT into the Shuttle though and give a before and after set of scores.

Right now I just got a Voodoo 4 in the shuttle with the mobile cause it's all I had for it.

I'd like to break 20k, but I'll have to hit about 2.5Ghz to get close.

I'll see if this little shuttle can take it.

I'm gonna half to wait for cooler weather though, cause it's bout 90F in this room(computers heat up a dorm room quick), we'll find out how high she goes though.

3) See if it has enough horsepower to overcome the mighty Ti4600!

No, you have h4x and you know it.

Also, I need to add that I ran this test and the previous test with Steam running in the background. I will run the tests again later without Steam.

And here are the results with AAx4 & AFx8.

Not to question your methods, but for AA and AF settings to take effect sometimes you have to restart after you make your changes even if it doesnt ask.

Good scores either way though

Try um again and restart after you set it up this time.

Before you run the benchmark.

Ok, here are the scores after setting AA & AF to 4 & 8. And restarting the pc.

You'll notice, the scores went up a little bit. So, I'm not gonna complain. My scores are not that far off from your's Birdman. I'm sure if I jumped up to an Athlon 64 CPU they would go up some more. (need to save my pennies to get one.)

Once again, this is my setup: Barton 2500+(OC to 3200+), ATI Radeon 9600XT(stock) and 1 Gig Memory.

One more thing. In comparing my results, it looks like I should be playing COD with AAx4 & AFx8 turned on. Because it increases my fps. Just a thought.

I tried last night to play at that level, but 58fps wasn't cutting it, seemed to lag just a little on my end. I couldn't honestly tell any difference in image quality either. So all AA, AF is turned off again.

Those scores are pretty impressive when comparing to my system.

My Barton is clocked @ about the same speed as yours and you get pretty close to my scores. This is considering the fact that you have a 9600XT and I have the 9800XT.

Maybe the game is limited by CPU?

Even @ 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 6xAF!

Either that or the 9800XT needs a faster processor than a 3200+ to feed its hunger.

Im gonna post up some UT 2k3 benchmark scores using this program

http://www.hardocp.com/files/ut2k3_benchmark_utility_2-1.zip

If any of you still have the game installed lets compare some stuffs in that engine.
