Birdman February 2, 2004 Share Birdman Member February 2, 2004 lunk nice specs and good scores you may wanna tweak on that system a lil more though. My pal that has a 2500+@3200+ and a stock 9600xt and 512 MB of system ram gets 13400 in 3dmark 01 what kinda mobo you got?

quickfoot February 6, 2004 Share quickfoot Member February 6, 2004 wow bird my scores are almost identical to yours, i also would be happy to hit 20k but thats about 1,000 points off for me. for now i'll just be happy i can play games like farcry @ 1600x1200 perfectly. Birdman February 7, 2004 Share Birdman Member February 7, 2004 Killa man... I would love to run 20k, but it looks like it would take about a 300 dollar investment for a water cooling setup. Id rather just get an athlon 64 setup for that much cash and then be able to run 20k stock. But im gonna do neither so 20k isnt gonna happen for a good 8-12 months. Birdman February 9, 2004 Share Birdman Member February 9, 2004 One could only hope. I had pretty much the same thoughts about it as he did about 2 years ago. Slowly learned more and more about it though. And took the plunge on overclocking a couple months ago. I have 3 overclocked AMD systems now. Running Folding@Home for months on end and no stability problems at all. You just have to know what you are doing. No need to pay a price premium, unless you just like to brag. And by brag I mean make a silly fool out of yourself.
dwEEziL February 9, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member February 9, 2004 My OCing was very stable until I updated my BIOS. Now I freakin blue screen all the time, stock speeds or OC'ed. Gotta downgrade the BIOS back soon me thinks.
Birdman February 9, 2004 Share Birdman Member February 9, 2004 hmm... that happens a lot though. If you check any abit forums there is always a bunch of peeps that have better luck overclocking with certain bios versions. The same would hold true for your board dweez. I just got done running my system for 2 weeks without one restart or error, and thats with multiple installs, tons of game playing, and 100% CPU usage the whole time. dwEEziL February 9, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member February 9, 2004 Oh, I know Bird. I was blaming it on the BIOS. I was super stable before the upgrade.
Birdman February 9, 2004 Share Birdman Member February 9, 2004 I used to upgrade my bios until i noticed I never really gained anything. Definatly depends on what board you have though. Some of the crappier mobos need a bios update just to run out of the box. Epox and ABIT have been pretty good about that though for me. MSI too i suppose. NOFX February 9, 2004 Share NOFX Member February 9, 2004 my first overclock was a while back. Lets see... I had my AMD K6-2 450Mhz @ 475 or 500. Cant remeber now but I got it to run a little faster hehe. Back in tha day you had to use jumpers to set the system bus and jumpers for the multiplier as well. I was only able to Overclock by the multiplier because the system bus was increments of 66, 83, 100, 116?, 133 if my memory serves me correctly. That sucker wouldnt even boot with a jacked up bus speed.
dwEEziL February 9, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member February 9, 2004 Hehe, I overclocked my work 133MHz system to 200MHz using jumper to adjust the multiplier. This was when Gateway used the same mobo/cpu for their 133MHz, 166MHz and 200MHz. The only difference was the size of the cpu heatsink. When I ran it at 200MHz, I had to leave the case side panel off so it would stay cool enough.

dwEEziL February 11, 2004 Share dwEEziL Member February 11, 2004 Yeah, I hadn't even bumped the CPU multiplier up on the old BIOS. I know have it bumped to 11.5 with a 190 FSB (3200+ speeds) and it is very stable. Before, I would play about 10-15 minutes of Serious Sam and it would BSOD. Often, it would just BSOD or lock hard just browsing. After backing off the BIOS, I played SS for about 1.5 hours and it was running smooth and cool. Lunk February 12, 2004 Share Lunk Member February 12, 2004 lunk nice specs and good scores you may wanna tweak on that system a lil more though. My pal that has a 2500+@3200+ and a stock 9600xt and 512 MB of system ram gets 13400 in 3dmark 01 what kinda mobo you got? Birdman, I've got a Biostar M7NCD Pro mobo. And I love it. I'm sure my scores would go up some. If I played around with the settings on my 9600xt. I haven't quite figured out how the oc works on vid cards or what settings will give me the most boost. But, I'll oc the snot outta my cpu. I've been pretty impressed with the 9600xt. For me, it was a nice step-up from the TI4200. And it brings out all the great details on games such as FarCry. BTW Dweez, when you upgrade your bios. It's best to set everything back to stock before doing it. Then OC after the bios upgrade. PS. Birdman I think it may be my ram holding me back. I'm using pc2700 with my fsb at 400. I think it's time to upgrade to some pc3200 ram.
