Also in Speech, Audio Input, click Properties and select the correct audio input line. My previous suggestion gets rid of the feed back.

Doesn't this need to be set to headphones when you want to use the headphones?

In your control panel, select "speech" and then click the "audio Input" button. This will allow you to select the the correct input line. It took me a couple of tries to get the right line selected so try "Preferred input...." first. GL!
