  1. intel has a completely different memory controller. 4 sticks should work just fine. also, if you take only 256mb out then you will no longer be using dual channel i believe... as per the original topic. you will notice NO DIFFERNCE going from 1 gig to 2 gig as at this point source doesn't even utilize 1gig of ram! the only time you will notice a difference is when you're using enough ram at one time that pagefiling is necessary... maybe if you do heavy photoshopping then it might be necessary. since my last reboot (3 days ago), my peak ram usage is only ~674mb. i have played source in that time. you can check this in your windows taskmanager under the performance tab and look in the bottom left corner. it says commit charge and then peak underneath. that number is the MOST amount of ram your system has addressed since your last reboot. if you're looking for a performance increase then post your full system specs and i'll be able to advise you on your best upgrade solution.
  2. how old is your computer???? even some of the old p3's i have sitting around have onboard sound...
  3. did i not say that? HT is not HTT(hyperthreading). HT is the bus that a64 uses to communicate with the ram. in this case it runs at 800mhz or 1600mhz full duplex. socket 939 cpus run on a 1ghz hyper transport bus. you can technically set them to 600mhz though and notice very little, if any, drop in performance. hyperthreading is a performance feature on all 800mhz or 1066mhz fsb intel cpus that makes an operating system think that there are actually 2 cpus in the system. theoretically this allows the computer to run smoother when more than 1 process is asking for cpu time.
  4. wow tigerdirect... oh well you're in barrie so there's probly not much up there. i love my computer stores around here. just commenting cause they're far from the cheapest around.
  5. 800mhz HT yes. lol, why does everyone call them semptrons? anyway all socket 754 have 800mhz HT. it's not actually fsb but stores call it that rather than having a long drawn out explanation of what HT actually is.
  6. so what is the tickrate? and why can't it be 100? it appears from what you all are saying that it should be set to 100...
  7. ati for it's hl2 superiority. source is the main game i play.
  8. i'd go with 2x1024. with 4x512mb even with the new mem controller you still have to use 2t. *edit - has anyone actually gone from 1 to 2 gigs? any noticable difference? if so, where? i noticed a difference when i went from 512mb to 1gig but windows peaks at maybe 700mb usage for me so i don't think i'd notice anything goin to 2gigs. infact, right now, after having played source all night with irc, msn, f@h(big packets), teamspeak, firefox and xfire running at the same time, my peak usage still is only 734mb.
  9. it's not possible. overclocking is the key to getting value for your money. if you aren't going to overclock then you'll have to spend a lot to get an awesome system.
  10. lol step down. 3000+ means about the performance of a 3.0ghz p4 more or less. bus speeds are a confusing thing and they mean different things for intel and amd. amd64 cpus have built in memory controllers so bus speed has less of an impact vs intel. to save yourself much confusion just concentrate on which cpu you want. intel and amd bus speeds are currently sufficient for their respective cpus. any a64 will bring you a huge gain over a 2.4ghz p4 in every area. especially in gaming. if you do mostly encoding then go intel but otherwise amd is the cpu to get.
  11. the fx57 IS NOT based on the older architecture. it's a san diego(venice with 1mb l2). the fx55 is also the cream of the crop and the new ones have the dsl technology. all they're missing is sse3 and the advanced mem controller. sse3 is useless as of now and the advanced mem controller translates into less than 2% gain. why do you make a comment about the memory controller when you're not planning on overclocking? afaik that's the only reason to be worried about a memory controller... at least go for the 4000+ which is 2.4ghz and has 1mb l2 cache. those are available just as much as the 3500s are. same with the 3500 though make sure you get the new core.
  12. if you're going for max price then the fx55 is the only way to go... unless you can find an fx57. my only questions are the cheap steel case and the silverstone psu. why not go with a pcp&c psu? there's an 850w sli one that is just mammoth. i have the 510w deluxe sli and it's plenty for any system i've seen. oh yea, get the ocz vx ram. 2-2-2-5 timings at 250+ fsb. your board is the only mobo capable of putting out the necessary voltage. the ram you've chosen is OLD ram. there's much better stuff out now.
  13. why are all the stat whores on scopeless??? maybe i should start on recrud forums...
  14. surely not in source though. for source, overclocking the cpu would bring the biggest gains. ________________________ clueless, you're going to want to get the stepping code off your cpu at some point cause you'll be asked that by most ppl if you post on any overclocking forums. it's right on your cpu. just write down all the number/letter combinations in order. also, how's your power supply? post amps on 12v, 3.3v, and 5v. it should say on a label on the side. check on the stickies in the link below. there's all kinds of tutorials and help there. a64 overclocking is tricky cause you have to worry about ram dividers and hypertransport multipliers. btw, my nick there is cujo. http://www.ocforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3 i have the same motherboard as you so if you need any help once you've read up a bit then just pm me. currently i'm at stock speeds on my a64 3400+ dtr(desktop replacement) as it has no ihs(integrated heat spreader, the big silver thing on your cpu) so my xp90 isn't sitting right on it. i have two pieces of cardboard between the ram and the cpu just to make it sit level. also note, you should be fine overclocking on stock cooling. at least at first to test out your chip. if you think you're chip is worthy of better cooling then shell out the extra cash. ps. i noticed you only have 512mb of ram. ram is REALLY CHEAP right now so you might want to spend 50 bucks on another 512mb. try to match what you already have(assuming you have one stick of 512mb). i noticed performance gains when i switched to a gig of ram. the game "feels" smoother.
  15. i NEVER buy a deagle in pistol round. i buy one clip of and armour. i love the glock too much. usp is alright too. most often after i die first i buy a deagle, armour, nade, flash and pick up whatever gun i come across first. if i'm struggling i'll buy just an awp with nothing else. sometimes i'll colt or ak instead of deagle. but anyway that's pretty much my strat. plz don't exploit me too much. ;P
  16. i agree this map is very fun. yes there's are a lot of sniping spots but it's a small map and most spots are in plain view/easy to see. there aren't many clear lines either. no fps issues here. certainly it's no worse than aztec. then again there were only 8-10 ppl on when i was playin tonight. i'd love to play with 14. it'd be so hectic. definately a keeper.
  17. you still haven't said what your old one is. yes installing a new mobo is a huge procedure. it requires removing almost everything from your case.
  18. is there not a more compact list somewhere? that list has so much stuff i'll never need. btw, i'd already found that one but thanks still.
  19. as teh title says i'm looking for a solid list of rcon commands. csls has a server now and i need to learn up. the one link i got had them completely all wrong and i've not found a good link yet. plz help. obviously i'm looking for cs:source commands rather than 1.6 or some other hl mod.
  20. and are the double or single sided? also, if amd64 what is your command rate setting?
  21. ok now that will not work. you need EQUAL SIZED RAM in each channel for dual channel. that's why i was asking what size... plz note that an a64 system with 4 sticks of ddr400 ram the ram will only run at ddr333. only with the new venice revision(which i guarantee you DON'T have) can you run 4 sticks at ddr400 on an a64 board... and that's not even for sure cause it still depends on the mobo. consult your mobo manufacturers website if you don't believe me. stop criticizing me for asking. i am trying to ensure that it will work when he's finished. at this point it WILL NOT work so it's a good thing i'm getting answers.
  22. so hold on. what's your final configuration going to be then? plz list the size of memory for each stick.
