  3. Wow, she didn't look 48 j/k! Happy birthday and many happy returns.
  4. Hey, at least all the commotion got you a medic!
  5. Heck with that, I'm waiting for the pretty doctor. And "MEDIC!" I entered the scene with some scuffs and bumps and three bruises!
  6. Happy birthday and many happy returns, Clueless. And if it's not your birthday, then we're clueless and +1 post!
  7. Stephen, I think. The guy that did Band of Brothers and a million other important historical books. Agreed. I've read almost all of the 100 best books from the list that came out a couple years ago, but these are my top favorites with books that I'd want on a desert island and that I will make my son read: My favorite: Ernest Hemingway Alexandre Dumas Rudyard Kipling Joseph Conrad Ayn Rand Jack London Robert Ludlum (Bourne Series made me not be able to read Tom Clancy any more, even though I loved his books since I was in high school) Khalil Gibran
  8. Cool idea! I have a character: Name: Jim, goes by Chief (Spefial Forces Warrant Officer, see below for origin of Chief) Age: 30s (classified) Sex: Male Short Bio: Jim was born in Houston, Texas to a military family. Moving frequently, Jim speaks with a neutral American accent, years living abroad aided his development of proficiency in Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Italian through US Army language courses and years of operations in Special Forces including assignments for CIA DOO clandestine ops. The only living member of his family, Jim is known as an "assault" guy willing to breach and enter. Jim prefers to enter the battlefield adequately equipped and collect necessary supplies, weapons, and equipment from fallen adversaries. His penchant for assault lead to opportunites for wet work with the CIA. Operators are known to tell stories where Jim dispatched a small contigent of Tangos with a silenced .45 and commandeered their MG-mounted technical vehicle. Driving at break-neck speeds through the dusty village, Jim flanked the larger opposing force and provided a devasting covering fire allowing allied forces to advance and take their objective. His penchant for commandeering vehicles through force elimination ultimately earned him the nickname "Chief" when he captured a helicopter in Central Asia. Landing at the designated rally-point, the team leader asked Jim, "How did you come by a helo, Sargeant?" To which Jim replied, "Well I promoted myself to Chief Warrant Officer." As a Special Forces Weapons Seargant, Jim is proficient in all firearms, foreign and domestic. Military basics: Ranger Tab Airborne qualified Sniper qualified 3rd SF group SFOD-D CIA dossier classified What kind of character you want: Heavy Weaponeer Weapon(s): Weapon of choice: Customized .45 based on the 1911, manufactured by Wilson Custom Combat and serviced by Special Forces armorers at Ft. Bragg, NC. Wilson .45 Primary weapon: M4 carbine manufactured by Rock River Arms Primary weapon alternative: Heavy caliber (.308) Heckler & Koch G3 for increased stopping power and squad fire support HK G3
  9. Hehe misinterpreted the thread and posted up my short story! I really like Kafka stories too, he's writing from such a dark era and a rough place. He's like an eastern european Poe. My favorite author of all is Ernest Hemingway, and he has some great short stories. I love his prose and the way he studies characters. I would recommend them for sure. As for mine, I have outlined the story and the concept, mapped out the chapters in general and know where I want the story to go. So I've worked on lots of pieces. My big problem is that the story ends quite differently than it starts, so I need to figure out how to loop it...in the mean time I keep reading hoping to figure it out! If you've read Tom Clancy, especially Without Remorse, then my Jim character is similar to John T. Kelly AKA Mr. Clark AKA John Clark. The story focuses on the psychology and people more though. Glad you liked it & I hope to have more of it to share someday! I'll see what I can dig out to share of other stuff.
  10. Regret a short story by me. All rights reserved! It's a character study that I've been working on for a novel. I've been trying to practice writing so that the style, pace, language captures the psychological situation of the characters & events. Here's the idea of the novel which has the working title "Patience." -----> How much patience does it take to sit by your mother’s death bed and watch her fight, and ultimately lose the battle for her life? Nobody is to blame for her loss, but Jim bounces between blaming himself for not being able to do more and wondering how she endured so much. For everything there is a time. Patience, they say, is a virtue. Perhaps it is the virtue that gives us the wisdom to know when to act, when to bide your time, or when not to tell that crass joke. If revenge is a dish best served cold, how much patience must it take to wait? When setting the trap, how much would the average person calculate and plan. How much personal sacrifice would you commit to achieving a goal? Imagine being a sniper, staring down the high-powered scope. Loosely sliding your finger on the steel of the trigger? Loosely? Could you hold a rifle high on a man’s chest, waiting to pull the trigger and touch the trigger lightly? Would you have had the patience to crawl for three days through the jungles and fields of Vietnam to execute an officerâ€â€knowing that the crack of that one shot would alert all enemies? Jim is a man whose patience has been tested. Watching his mom die, losing his friend, going into combat.
  11. I know this is almost another 200 bucks over the monitor you picked, but with the 60 rebate you are getting one of the better reviewed monitors out there as far as large LCDs go. 5ms response time is nice too....if you're card can push 1600x1200 and your wallet can afford 300 bucks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16824001226
  12. Personally, it's awfully late in development not to get full 1080 native resolution if you're buying now. That reco. is 1024x768, so you can watch other signals but only at 720 or lower! ICK! Depends on if you're sold on LCD, DLP or Plasma also. But the Sharp lcd's have a few 1080 monitors and the 37" "is among the best LCD sets we've ever tested." according to Consumer Reports.
  13. Ya that $35 one I linked to is something that I will need in my next machine I think! And Orville Redenbacher is from Indiana, so I guess I'm the second...
  14. lol all these birthdays are like Wonderland! Happy birthday fellas and many happy returns!
  15. Thought about putting this in the Political Asylum, thought about putting it in the religious thread. But it isn't really political, and not necessarily religious. I'm probably still feeling philosophical after my mom died, but this article had a great message...a feel good message...that I thought I'd share up here. It's more about reflection, so feel free to read it...but try and start threads in the Political Asylum or Relgious Discussion areas if you plan on taking it that way. Newsweek
  16. For a couple bucks more than that one, you can have a card reader included! Performance-pcs.com

    MMA Fans?

moss and I missed the CSS tourney at FragFest to go watch the UFC fight in Akron! I like watching MMA, but I like having the ground component. I don't remember ever being in or watching a fight that didn't go to the ground. UFC is bringing in more rules and I'm starting to like Pride a little more.

    lost

Lost is a good quality show, but it's so few and far between a new show that I miss it way more than I watch it. Then I use my free Blockbuster rentals to watch the DVDs. But I pretty much watch these shows each week: Law & Order - TNT with Elizabeth Rohm as the ADA - woh she's hot, she's one of my favorites females but all of them are good especially SVU with Eliot Stabler and that asian shrink The Closer - on TNT with Keira Sedgwick The Unit - Delta Force TV show on CBS is done really well Monk - on USA lol Tony Shaloub (or whatever) is perfect but I liked the original sidekick girl better Ultimate Fighter - Spike The 4400 - on USA is a pretty interesting scifi show Psych - on USA is a funny spoof show Pride Fighting - on Fox Sports Networks Elisabeth Rohm ftw
  19. Are you using a hanes manual? That's a rediculous long time for something that should be a routine operation. Wow.
  20. Well, the emphasis is definitely on vehicle combat. Gotta try more maps and stuff, but I like an infantry bias. Played pretty well on my machine. Better than CSS on inferno.
  21. I downloaded the podcast and skipped to the last 20 minutes. Glad you enjoyed getting on the radio.
  22. Red Orchestra is the new Steam-delivered game that looks a whole lot like BF42 with improved realism and (IMO) better vehicle usage. It's going to cost 25 bucks after the free trial. If you have Steam you can watch tutorials for infantry and vehicles, as well as watch a couple of trailers. The game is also available for preload, and the five free days starts in 45 minutes. I'm preloaded and so is Bat. We're going to be going at soon, hope to join some of you guys for the trial! Pros -amazing graphics and ultra-realistic game play (rifles have functional adjustments for elevation!), large maps and numbers of players, player classes and weapons selections Cons -Russians VS Germans Edit: -----> http://www.redorchestragame.com
