TFR|Cyberwrath August 15, 2004 Share TFR|Cyberwrath Member August 15, 2004 I've been thinking about getting a new graphics card since mine is pretty outdated. Right now I have a GeForce 2 64mb card, and I'd like something a little more powerful, but I really don't know much about any video cards. Would anyone suggest me a pretty good card near the $200 range that'll last me awhile and able me to up my video settings on some demanding next-generation games? I have a P4 1.6 ghz comp with 768 mb of ram, so I dont want a card that will overpower me/slow me down, if that's possible

mrX August 15, 2004 Share mrX GC Alumni August 15, 2004 I've got the 9800pro and am happy with it. I only have 512mb of ram and have learned that that's not really enough for the card to reach its full potential. With 768 not sure what it'll do, but it's a big step from a GF2 64mb (which I also have in one of my comps).
Crowbar August 15, 2004 Share Crowbar Member August 15, 2004 yeah, I've got a 9800 Pro, bought it for $210, and it runs great, for $200 it's THE card to buy.
TFR|Cyberwrath August 15, 2004 Author Share TFR|Cyberwrath Member August 15, 2004 Well I've been looking on BestBuy.com and the 9800 PRO is around $240. And the ATI - RADEON 9600 SE Graphics Card is only $120 and looks pretty nice. It'll be a big step up anyway, and I'm leaning toward that.
All Kill3r August 15, 2004 Share All Kill3r Member August 15, 2004 9600SE is a bad choice for an upgrade that you want to last awhile. It won't even play new games. SE = sucky edition. its a little slower then a GF4 Ti4200 and a little faster then an ATI 9200
Preacher August 15, 2004 Share Preacher Member August 15, 2004 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-161-113&depa=1 This is the one I have, it rocks Doom 3 in all the highest settings
All Kill3r August 15, 2004 Share All Kill3r Member August 15, 2004 for 10 more dollars you get a 9800Pro 8 pipelines opposed to 4 256bit memory opposed to 128bit and roughly 25% more frames per second.
Batman August 15, 2004 Share Batman Member August 15, 2004 Yes i agree with AllKiller, the 9800pro is the better card for now and in the long run.. Why drive in 4 lanes when you could have 8??
Guest zerodamage August 15, 2004 Share Guest zerodamage Guests August 15, 2004 That card upgrade will not do much for you with only a 1.6 P4. I had a 1.7 P4 at my work and the thing was much much slower than my 1.3 Duron system. Those first gen P4's are terribly slow. You may want to try going for a full system upgrade or a piece at a time.
TFR|Cyberwrath August 15, 2004 Author Share TFR|Cyberwrath Member August 15, 2004 Hmmm, alrirght. But if I go with a 9800 pro (since I only have a 1.6 P4) will I be able to use the card to its full extent? Or will I have poor frames or lag since the computer is only 1.6 ghz? Keep in mind that I do have 768 ram. I'm not sure what's important between ram and processor speed.

You will be able to use AA and AF in most older games. Just your fps will only go so high.

gOOters August 19, 2004 Share gOOters Member August 19, 2004 I think Imma buy my 9800 Pro today. Is the Sapphire ATI 9800 Pro okay? If I buy it (bulk) on newegg, it is a little cheaper than the ATI 9800 Pro. They are basically the same right?
gOOters August 19, 2004 Share gOOters Member August 19, 2004 what about ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...5117024896&rd=1 that ^ is a 3D Hercules Prophet 9800 Pro, going for about $160. I think it is used, but they say they test it and warrantee it for 30 days, plus the seller has stars out the wazoo!

mrX August 19, 2004 Share mrX GC Alumni August 19, 2004 I wouldn't buy a sapphire......but I can't remember why :/ It's been since December that I bought the 9800 pro, and for some reason I remember specifically steering away from that brand. Don't have anything solid tho....
gOOters August 19, 2004 Share gOOters Member August 19, 2004 okay...sapphire is off. I will either buy the ATi 9800 Pro on newegg, or a Hercules new on ebay. Anything else I should look out for? If it is a Hercules 9800 Pro with 128MB onboard from a very reputable seller, brand new...I should be safe right? They all have the same num. of pipelines and same onboard processors and whatnot right?
