gOOters September 17, 2005 Share gOOters Member September 17, 2005 Any good alternatives to the iPOD Nano that my wife is lusting after? She will use it for workouts and such. She would probably want to be able to put audio books on it too. Thoughts? Costs?? Methods of loading the mp3 player?? I am painfully ignorant on the subject. Just wanna know if we need to drop $200 to do this??

Primus September 17, 2005 Share Primus Member September 17, 2005 No you don't have to drop that much anymore. Here try looking at these. 1. check your lockal Aldis, they have a 512 meg Ipod for only $90 bucks 2. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...u=M450-4006%20R 3. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1093469676997 The nice thing about these are that you have double male jack that comes with them and you can plug that into any headphone jack and record the music that way also. Hop this helps, and for the most part they are all pretty much the same. The difference is in the meg size 256,512,1gb and so on. My son has a 256 meg and he can get 4 hours of music on it, so it depends on how long she will be listening to it.
TheReverend(c) September 17, 2005 Share TheReverend(c) Member September 17, 2005 Ipods are nice. Here is a link for retail pricing. http://www.apple.com/ipod/ FuturePowerPC.com has a pink 4GB one for $187. There are other good brands but Ipod is about the best. Expect to pay $100 or more for a good one.

JackieChan September 17, 2005 Share JackieChan GC Alumni September 17, 2005 (edited) If spending 300 dollars isn't too much for you, I suggest you get an iAUDIO X5 Holds 20 gigs, color screen, plays mp3s, movies, records stuff... Although if your wife is just wants one for workouts, etc. I suggest you try some of these: http://onlinestore.jetaudio.com/index.asp?...PROD&ProdID=123 http://onlinestore.jetaudio.com/index.asp?...WPROD&ProdID=12 http://onlinestore.jetaudio.com/index.asp?...PROD&ProdID=160 iAudios aren't very known, but I've heard that they offer good quality products. I have an IAudio X5, and I'm VERY happy with it. Edited September 17, 2005 by JackieChan
gOOters September 18, 2005 Author Share gOOters Member September 18, 2005 We saw the IAudios at Best Buy. Ended up getting her a white Nano. With PodCasts, iTunes, iAudiobooks, and upcoming iMovies; the iPod offers some things that she wanted that no other mp3 player offers. She wants audio books and free Dr. Laura in addition to her music, I guess. Apple really is going to own the handheld music/multimedia device market as it really gets kicked off here, Im afraid. gOOters September 18, 2005 Author Share gOOters Member September 18, 2005 Wow Jackie, the line-in mp3 encoding realy is cool. So is the movie supportability. It's more than my wife would want. But I might want one of those!
Bubblegum Bandit September 18, 2005 Share Bubblegum Bandit Member September 18, 2005 Hey, Jackie, how does the FM tuner on the X5 work? Is it at least half way decent. I have been looking for an MP3 player but I want to also be able to use it to listen to my morning DJs while I ride the bus in to work. Does it get half way decent reception? Does it get half way decent reception? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The reception, to me, is amazingly good. Just as long as you don't use it in a place where it might have any interferance, it will work just fine. In your situtation, the bus would be a good place to use it in. Plus, if you want, it says somewhere you can record FM radio stations. Also, you may have wondered about it's movie playback feature. For that to work, you need to encode the movie so it's viewable on the iaudio. Most if not all movie extension files (wmv, avi, asx, etc) work when you encode it. It plays at a reasonable 15 frames per second, but, it is very smooth. It just depends on the quality of the movie. For some reason, I've noticed that loading large files seem to drain the battery life so be careful with files that are over 200 or so megs. If you want to primarily use it for movies, look at the iaudio X5L It has 35 hour battery life, but it's drawback to that is a 6 hour recharge time. Best time to recharge one of those beasts would be at night. Edited September 18, 2005 by JackieChan
Casper September 20, 2005 Share Casper Member September 20, 2005 Do NOT get an Ipod... Bought one for my sister with the 1yr extended waranty... The thing won't keep a charge at all. Came to find out that there was a Civil Action Lawsuit against Apple because of this "flaw" and I should take it in to get the battery *replaced* To make a long story short, The warranty means nothing... If the battery is bad, then it will cost 59.99 to replace (processing fee). But I had the warranty right? wrong... I do have the warranty however according to Apple "It is not a fautly battery, or a design flaw... it's a rechargeable battery, so it's not covered." I brought up the civil action lawsuit... "We are allowed to take the Ipod and run a test on the battery (2-4 business days) and if it is bad it will cost 29.99 to replace." But I had the warranty, what the heck does that cover? "If this occured in the first 6 months of the warranty, then it wouldn't cost anything, however since it is in the last 6 months of it, it will cost 29.99 to replace." Convieniently it is exactly 13 days into the 7th month... I asked if I go along with it, if they would replace the battery here or would it have to be sent out... they replied "We just give you a new one out of the box" So it is a design flaw, however they just like to push it on you and make it your fault. On top of which, I had to sit through and watch the Apple support personell belittle and make a 14 yr old girl cry, because they were making her feel stupid. She was having the same issue that I was... I let them have an ear full, asked to speak to the manager, and then was escorted out of the store. So yeah, I'm not a fan of Ipod any more.. Good luck
