Lookin for advice

Alright - I am looking for advice on what to get for some new parts - Here are my limitations.

It must be AGP since I just recently bought a 9800XT AGP vid card.

I have a P4 2.6Ghz now with a decent MB but I am having memory conflict problems and it has finally driven me over the edge so I am looking to go AMD.

What MB is recommended that has AGP and is good?

What processor speed should I go?

Is it possible to do a 64bit system and still retain AGP? Or should I just sell the card and get an X800 or 7series PCI-E card?

Also - Memory confuses me nowadays. What is the differnece between PC3200/2700/etc...? Does it matter?

Thanks

i would go with a dfi or msi s939 nf3 board and a 3200+. zero's deal is good but it's that cheap for stock clearing of old tech. with a 939 cpu you have a bit more of an upgrade path. it's up to you though. if you go with zero's deal and then just overhaul the whole thing down the road it's a good idea. this all depends on your ram though. what do you currently have?

ZD - That appears to be a good deal from everything I can see.

What would be the benefit of 939 over 754? I will probably move to a better video card in 2 years or less and would go to PCI-Express. Is it possible to get a board with AGP and PCI-E?

Soul, that is a good deal if your going to upgrade again in 1-2 years anyway.

I have a 754 pin AMD 3400+ & although I would sometimes like a little faster,

mine is still the fastest computer of everyone I know. (offline that is.) 754 is

on its way out, but so is 939

In a couple of years there will be even better stuff out there. But

that is ALWAYS going to be true. 9800 XT is still a fairly good card.

If you want to extend its life & not pay too much money I would go for

ZD's deal & don't look back!!

There is an ASRock board with AGP/PCI Express 16.

ASRock 939Dual-SATA2

Don't have any experience with the board myself but a 939 with AGP/PCI Express 16 & SATA2 for $71 shipped is not bad. 147 newegg reviews in 2 months. Might wanna read through those and do a little forum hopping to familiarize yourself with the board.

The performance difference between socket 754 and 939 are really very small. You might get a higher 3D Mark score but in your day to day usage it won't matter at all.

I will say that I'm aware of Acid Flux wanting to sell his 754 3400 CPU for around $100. Also you can get a nice little barebone set-up for $113 here : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16856110032

I noticed it includes PCI Express as well as AGP. Same price range there but if you have a good case already I suggest this:

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103470

That CPU is for the mobile set-up so it uses less voltage and has less heat.

Hope you get a dandy :)

1 - Corsair 1GB PC3200 RAM - $91.25

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820145505

1 - Athlon 64 3700+ Clawhammer 800Mhz FSB - $205.00

http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103461

1 - EPoX Nforce3 MB - Free with above CPU

http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?...N82E16813123225

1 - 19"LCD Monitor - $239.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16824160147

Will this be a decent setup?

Sorry for all the questions - I used to be good at this stuff but as it changes I became a noob again.

Can someone tell me why this only has a 800mhz system bus as opposed to

the standard 1600mhz for a 754 pin slot?

Soul I just picked up this. It's a little more expensive but it's worth it.

^^ They usually last only a few days. Newegg is always changing up their deals. My sugestion to you is email or even phone them and ask. esp if you want it and would "order it next week" then find out it's not on sale.

when I bought my parts, 1 of them wasnt even in stock anymore and 2 of the others their rebates were gone.
