HEADSET TIME! (pt2)

stutters

Recommended Posts

alright, i've just finished stepping on my 2nd pair of altec lansing 2.1 $50 best buy headphones. i hope for just a little bit more dough, i can land me some sweet cans. :smiling2:

i've been through fatty's pinned post, i'm just curious to know if there's any new cans on the market. i'm looking to be between $75-$100 (including tax + shipping), but if there's anything just above that range, i might be able to free up some plasma to donate. i've always kind of held a bias against the usb soundcard headphones, but if it's the way to go, so be it. oh yeah, i need to have a mic.

recommendations?

<3,

edit1: is it possible to get surround sound (5.1?) out of a headset in the $75-100 range?

I'm a firm believer in skipping the headset. I use a cheap standard mic like you can get from newegg for 5 or 10 bucks and put all of my money into headphones...Between music movies and the knifer sneaking up behind you, good sound is my priority.

I have the Sennheiser HD590s which are audiophile quality, but there are some pretty decent choices available for your price range. As far as design, the best feature to look for is a full over-the-ear design so that none of the pressure is squeezing your ear cartilege, makes them comfortable for all day use as well as keeping the sound more natural.

Whatever you do, before you buy anything go to a couple of retailers, especially a highend shop and try on a bunch to check the sound quality and fit comfort. I ended up buying mine at a highend shop on Michigan Avenue for cheaper than I could find them online.

Tough to beat Sennheiser for the $$

I'm all for audiophile quality. But for me, having a separate mic is just too much of a nuisance. I want the mic right there, not sitting on the table, in the way of my wild mouse gesticulations. So when I recently rolled my chair the wrong way and ripped the cord off of my old headset, I went looking for a replacement in that genre. I tried about 4 different models, including Logitech and Altecs, before I settled on the Plantronics Audio 90. These use regular mini plugs for the mic & speaker jacks, because I'm also not keen on the USB. I found them to be much more comfortable than the others I had brought home, and they sound pretty good. No, they don't sound as good as the Sennheisers that Chief reccommends, but they do prett well for locating sounds in game.

The best part was that I found a Newegg deal where they were selling an unboxed OEM version of the same thing for $19.99, so I bought 2. Not sure if that deal is stilll available. But on this item, you can save 40-50% by ordering online.

Trittons

Saw these at Newegg for the same price. (as listed with Tigerdirect 150.00) I'm willing to bet

those are pretty awsome, but

out of your pricerange. I have the first ones, (most people around here do, i think)

Great bass. Awp's & shotty's actually sound like they are supposed to. No complaints. They

are the ones featured in Fatty's thread, I believe.

Looks like they are hard to find. Leave it to good old Buy.com to have some.

They are USB but worth it. Great sound no matter if you go to your laptop.

GC Alumni

nice link, m2. mohawk's copyright lawyers might be calling you in the next day or two.

work's pwnzerizing me, but thanks for the links. at least i'll have some money...maybe even afford those medusa's.

i still don't get the advantage (or justification) of paying for a usb soundcard. my audigy autodetects my gaming prefs, so if i plug headphones in, it automatically switches to whatever i had it last set at (2/5/7.1). is there something i'm missing, or is the usb soundcard just come standard on higher end sets?

SJ, The USB headsets are also intended for those using laptops which typically do not have good sound. The 5.1 sound allows for full sound in dvd's, etc.
