Headset vs. Soundcard

Hello, just built a new computer and the mic input on the motherboard (Asus p5b-e) doesn't work. Rather than send the board back and have Mini rebuild everything, I am debating between getting a soundcard or just getting a USB headset. Headset would be the easiest, but than everytime I want to play without headphones I wouldn't have a mic. I guess it will come down to what I can get for a good price yet has good quality . Any product suggestions?

Thanks,

Or soemthing like this might work:

Since I already have a headset (that isn't usb).

usb headsets will not give you anywhere near the sound quality that a good card will get you. i suggest anything from the x-fi line of sound cards.

btw, i would send the mobo back. why pay money for something that doesn't work as it should?

i'm lucky cause in canada we have local pc shops where you can buy parts like that. if something is busted i just return it. not sure why you guys don't have that down there but it must suck.

I dont have the time to send the board back, because I head back down to school in a couple of days. Unfortunately, its too far of a drive for Mini to make a house call.

I saw this sound card on newegg thats a x-fi:

Any thoughts about this one.

I'd be careful with that one, I had that one for about a week (bought from best buy on sale), and periodically it would start producing strange "popping" sounds (this happened almost 2 months ago, so I can't remember exactly what it sounded like). The problem would go away with a restart of my computer, but I think it came back every time my computer woke up from standby. I returned the card and am back to using my on-board sound card since I didn't want to put up with something that wasn't right when the money could be better spent elsewhere.

I know this won't speak for every example of that model, but I know my experience was not the only example of this happening. Anyways, just wanted to give my input. IMO, splurge for the fatal1ty and avoid the possible problems :D

I usually play using the headset, which is not all that great of one, or using my speakers. My speakers are several years old, there are just 2 plus a sub. So my question is, besides this possible popping noise, is there any reason to spend the $145 vs $70?

Originally when i thought of sound cards, i was thinking along the lines of this price:

But the system that I just had built is a very nice one, and don't want to put something that isnt on the same level as the rest of system.

Thanks,

you NEED 2gb of ram. you will be page filing that setup even in source. i routinely pass 1gb of memory usage in source.

ghost recon, battlefield, and most other new games are passing 1gb of memory usage and run smoother and load faster with 2gb.

otherwise that's a topnotch system and i'm jealous.
