Secondary languages are not required in most Public Schools in the United States (although I think they should be). At my high school, I had the option of French, Spanish, German, or Russian. I think the first 3 are commonly taught as secondary languages here, with latin also sometimes being taught in places. I have taken about 5 years of German in high school and college and am working on a German minor.
