stutters June 21, 2005 Share stutters GC Alumni June 21, 2005 funny you should say its a "new area." you might want to keep record of that speed, and then record a speed test onces every 3 months or so. if you notice a drastic drop in speed, you've got some decent leverage against your provider--as your neighborhood fills up, speeds typically drop to a lower than advertised (and acceptable) rate... Brillow_Head June 23, 2005 Share Brillow_Head Member June 23, 2005 I got cable hooked up to my house today and the conversation with the guy got me confused. He said they were installing new servers to double the bandwidth (which is uber pimp sweet type thing) so advertised I'd get 6Mbs down and 500kbs up. I also talked to him about our old speeds (3 Mbs down/256kbs up) and he said that while the speed tests register 256kbs upload, I am, in reality, only getting 50kbs. This absolutely floors me. Is there a way to verify this cause my speed tests show 256kbs? If the service guy full of it? I so envy the guy who has > 256kbs upload. The good news is my new speeds (a bit unstable ATM) run at 4.3Mbs down/ 256kbs upload. My QOS dropped to 90% from my previous 97% but I'm hopping it will stabilize as they get the new servers purring.

Lol, I think I just got pwned by you guys. I don't have much knowledge about internet connection speeds, but am I getting my money's worth? They advertised it as 2mb line. also take into account, that I live in the UK, so that may disadvantage it slightly
Brillow_Head June 30, 2005 Share Brillow_Head Member June 30, 2005 you upload speed is pretty average for the US so it's good seeings how you live in the UK. Your download speeds could use some work, usually you'd get 60% of your advertized download speed. So you should be getting around 1.2-1.5 Mbps down. Looks like you've got a DSL line, who's your IP? Norguard July 28, 2005 Share Norguard Member July 28, 2005 (edited) 1078 / 631 from the other side of the continent. I'm getting 1.6 or 2.1 from places closer to home or with less traffic. I'm really pleased with Powergate as far as cable internet goes. They just added routers to increase bandwidth, and when I called about the lines to my house from the hub (right outside my front door), it took a day or two, but they completely rewired everything. Much love. Now, if only I had a PC... Edited July 28, 2005 by Norguard
