right now it's $2,560.90 with shipping

$2,470.90 after mail in rebate

$2,340.90 after the chip goes down to $300

$2,215.90 without the mouse and keyboard

$2,335.90 with the two 300 gb HDD's from best buy

This is with one 8800, I think I'll get the second after I take this hit to my paycheck. I'm also banking on the fans in the case being able to handle all the cooling I need.

I just built an almost identical system about 1 month ago:

Antec 900 case

PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 quad

Asus Striker Extreme Mobo

Creative X-Fi Xtremegamer Fatal1ty Sound Card

150GB Raptor

Core 2 Duo 6700

EVGA 8800GTX Superclocked

4GB DDR800 6400 G.Skill Ram (2 x 2GB sticks)

Zalman CNPS 9700 NT HS/Fan

Between that heatsink/fan and the 900 case I've had no issues at all with temperatures.

Btw, don't know if anyone else has one, but I love the Razer Tarantula keyboard that my wife kindly surprised me with about 2 weeks ago.

not much to add here. just that a quad and dual core of the same speed will perform the same in current games. the quad will not be slower. i want to make that clear.

also, go with a bigger psu. if it was my money i'd get the thermaltake 1200w. i've never heard of xion...

one other thing to consider is the sli drivers are pants right now in vista. if you do end up going sli you will be better of with xp.

what i'd suggest is getting a single card right now and then in the fall when nvidia releases their new lineup, upgrade at that point. current dx10 cards are performing horribly in dx10 mode in the few games that have support. the second gen dx10 cards will be significantly better at dx10.

actually, one big thing to add. if you're not buying for a couple weeks than wait a bit longer. intel will be releasing their x38 chipset boards. they will do both sli and crossfire and have official 45nm support for next gen processors as well as official 1333fsb support. also, ddr3 is getting cheaper and faster and since this is balls to the wall i'd wait and get that.

ocz just released some new ddr3 1600 ram that will have twice the bandwidth as what you're getting with the same latency.

I know nothing about the PSU and I can not seem to find any reviews on it so I can not really comment on that. The RAM is ok but would be better worth your money to spend a tiny bit more and get the CAS 4.0 RAM over the 5.0

very soon, august i believe, intel is releasing a new high end chipset to replace the 975. it's called the x38. it will do sli and crossfire, as well as have the most advanced overclocking features to date. it will officially support next gen intel cpus (like the p35 does).

the nvidia 6 series chipsets and intel's 965/975 do not officially support 1333fsb or 45nm cpus.

We'll have to wait to see some reviews and benchmarks to know for sure if what Intel is saying is true.

Also, the boost to 1333 fsb does almost nothing to improve performance of the cpu's at the moment. Maybe the new Intel chipset will do that.

it gives you a guaranteed stable overclock to on your 1066fsb cpus. if the motherboard can't do it then it's a legit reason to return the board. where as you get a 965 board that doesn't do 1333fsb you can't call up the manufacturer and say "my board doesn't go this high". and anyway besides that the p35 is a much better ocing board than the others available. the x38 is supposed to be awesome.

I believe most of the 680i boards can do 1333 now; I know that mine can. I can not do DDR3 but I think it will be a while before DDR3 gets as main stream and as affordable as DDR2 is now. In the beginning DDR2 was slower than DDR because of the high timings and low bandwidth. That has changed now and I am seeing the same thing with DDR3 at the moment. I do not think anyone should hold back on upgrading because of DDR3.

this explains a bit more what i'm talking about with "official". i haven't liked the nvidia chipsets since the beginning.

1333 boards are out already. as for the x38 boards you'll be looking in the $300 range.

in another month or so you'll see a lot more ddr3 on newegg. prices will be more than double than with ddr2 but think of the bleeding edgeness. balls to the wall. not to mention ddr3 is supposed to show much larger advantages with the 45nm cpus that are coming later in the fall.

When the new x38s come out, and you wait for a 45nm cpu, and you wait for ddr3 prices to drop a bit... something else will be the bawls to the walls... i'm going crazy just thinking about it.

Kinda like a brand new car. The second you drive it off the lot, it's worth less than you paid for it. :\

nah, there's nothing new on the horizon until late fall with new nvidia cards and intel's next gen cpu. amd's new one will be in august but it will almost certainly be a disappointment.

here's another article about ddr3. i truely think it's worth the wait for those that don't upgrade every 6 months or less like me and zd.

the conclusion is the most important part.

also note, the game benchmarks are using a 7950gt. the differences would be even more pronounced with an 8800gtx or 2.

  • 4 weeks later...

ok i lost a few other posts due to the shakedown of the forums but here's a quick update:

compy is up and running, i'm at work so i don't have pics of it to post

i'm running xp64bit pro right now

my 3d max 06 score was 9k, i haven't tweaked anything and that was with programs running

there's a few things i want to plan for:

i want to get a little more speed out of my system (oc the cpu and gpu maybe)

i'm using the stock fan from intel on the cpu and i'm thinking of getting a better heatsink

right now i run at about 45 degC with CSS running, highest it's gotten is 52 i wanna say. haven't had any hangups yet.

anyone running any thermoelectrics?

i also wanna tweak the 64 bit windows to try to get a lil more out of my apps. anyone have any guides?
