ZeroDamage July 24, 2008 Share ZeroDamage Member July 24, 2008 I accidentally figured out a way to do unlimited free invites. No worries, I will not share it.
ZeroDamage July 24, 2008 Share ZeroDamage Member July 24, 2008 I had to search around and finally found at the bottom of the FAQ that the files are all encrypted using 256-bit AES on the Dropbox (basically Amazon S3 servers) back end. I was wondering about that though and now that I know, I am pleased. I am wondering who's space gets used when you are sharing. Are both users using the space on a shared folder or the primary shared folder creator. I am curious.
stutters July 24, 2008 Author Share stutters GC Alumni July 24, 2008 when you share a file or folder, it's off your quota. if i share with you, it's off my quota. i'm not sure what happens when i share with you, then you share that with someone else. actually, i'm not even sure that's possible. keep your eye on the faq - they're going to be adding more about the security and privacy of your files: from team@dropbox.comto me@privacy.net, date Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 6:44 PM subject Re: feedback mailed-by gmail.com your timing is pretty awesome-- i'm actually putting out adjustments to the faq tonight and i'll be sure to keep your question in mind. best, jon - Hide quoted text - On Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 7:25 AM, a really cool guy wrote: hi guys, i've been spreading the good word on dropbox. everyone i've shared it with loves it, but i have had some consistent feedback on messaging, not the client. you guys have nailed the client ux. "how does dropbox store my data? how is it secured? how do i know it's not going to be crawled and indexed?" i know some of this stuff is covered in the FAQ, but anything you can do to add to the transparency (without giving away the secret sauce) would probably put a lot more people at ease. thanks, a ton. i love you all. -matt -- Jon Ying Community Leader, Dropbox

General J July 28, 2008 Share General J Member July 28, 2008 Any word on that linux client yet? Laptop RAM went belly up. So, while I was in replacement mode, Windows just happened to be dumped for Debian.

ZeroDamage July 28, 2008 Share ZeroDamage Member July 28, 2008 I sent an email request to participate in the Linux alpha/beta. I never did hear back despite my use of multiple Linux machines and the ability to report numerous potential bugs.
stutters July 28, 2008 Author Share stutters GC Alumni July 28, 2008 from what i read, there are only 25 people in the private alpha, and they closed down the application process a few months ago. in other words, don't take it personally. besides, the win and mac clients are still only in early beta, so there's still a chance for feedback all around. JordanRinke January 12, 2009 Share JordanRinke Member January 12, 2009 I use the pro drop box the 50GB to sync my truecrypt "file cabinets" and then I use live mesh to sync my windows mobile phone to my drop box folder. So when I take a picture or video on my phone it automatically sync's to my PC and then to drop box and I have a public link for it. Pretty slick. ZesteR March 9, 2009 Share ZesteR Member March 9, 2009 (edited) Actually if you use a referral from someone that already has dropbox, you and the referee would get an extra 250MB of free space. Up to 3GB of addition space. Here is my referral link, I'm sure some of you have it too. https://www.getdropbox.com/referrals/NTgwMTMyOQ Thanks again for the invite! I use this on 3 pcs, 4 OSs for school related and easy tranfer of files to other ppl. Edited March 9, 2009 by ZesteR
ZeroDamage March 9, 2009 Share ZeroDamage Member March 9, 2009 It's even better when you put a TrueCrypt volume on it. Of course you tend to have to restart Dropbox after using the truecrypt volume otherwise it will not sync up due to the way TrueCrypt locks the volumes. ZesteR March 9, 2009 Share ZesteR Member March 9, 2009 cool idea, but I would rather use this for data that if lost or stolen, i'm not at a big loss. mostly reference pdfs, homework files, and some pictures.
