first time I watched that vid was at work with no sound...and I found it sick.

then I rewatched it last night because of the talk of chopper vs. plane (wanted to listen for chopper sounds) and after hearing the cold detached voice of the gunners....made me twice as sick...

hearing the cold detached voice of the gunners....

Thats because their training has kicked in and they are almost in automatic mode Playaa, thats why they might sound inhuman but its not true...plz take a look at the link I provided, it may open your eyes a little.

Cold and detached is better than "OH OH OH, THERE'S ANOTHER ONE! GET HIM TOO!!!! WAHOOO!!!! THERE GOES ANOTHER ONE!!! YOU TORE THE CRAP OUTTA THAT ONE!!!". I guess considering the options, I would go with cold, detached, not to mention, calm and in complete control.

Shaw I wasn't saying that those guys themselves made me sick...just the idea that humans do things like this to each other and actually CAN detatch their feelings from it. I understand why they are in that situation and are to be commended for fighting for me...but I just don't think I could ever do it and I'm sickened that the human race has become what it has that we can do that without feeling

Playaa,

The detachment is a part of military training. When you are in battle, you cannot afford to become emotionally attached to what you are doing. Imagine hand to hand or small arms combat...that is even more "in your face". any soldier would be killed if he spent time pondering the mortality of each enemy.

That is why post-war trauma is so horrible.

just asked couple of specialists about not hearing rotors in that video and thats what I got

Definitely Apache.

The "camara" is usually just a direct link from the IHADDS HDU or whatever sensor is in priority (you can set that in flight: Pilot FLIR, CPG FLIR, TADS, RADAR (if longbow) or whatever MFD you want to record. In this it is looking thru FLIR with targeting provided by TADS and possibly LASER for range-finding...altho they seemed to be haviong trouble getting an accurate Laser return (weather related?)

Any sound is usually right off the intercom system, which does not pickup that much noise from the rotors or the engines because of the noise cancelling microphones.

Cheers

just curious how stealthy are those choppers? silent? the soilders down there didnt see it, hear it? how far up where they, do you think?

its not that silent...but American helicopter pilots are trained to do so called pop-ups, that means the choper is hovering very low taking cover behind some obstacle a tree for example, and then pilot executes pop-up, he/she raises the machine up say 5 meters more, over the cover while the gunner is engaging the targets as far away as 5 km / 3 miles away. Thats of course with missiles such as Hellfire, the gun is only effective at ranges below 2 km.

If this chopper was anywhere from 2 - 1 km away from you flying low, you wouldnt pick it up either.

Did anyone feel anything watching that?

I didn't read much of this thread before I watch it....

I felt sad.

These guys had no idea...and the amazing power of those guns....and the coldness that is necessary for the job...it looks like one of our video games...

I think the worst part was that guy cowering behind the truck. While enemy, killer, or whatever...the human-side of him shows when he cowers behind his truck.

I just killed a fly on my desk...yes one of those huge ones that you wonder, "It's winter...where has this thing been growing and why is he here?" It took me more effort to kill that fly and clean it up than it did there...the efficiency is startling. About the same amount of time, too.

Maybe I didn't read this above, but did they fire some rounds before they were "ranged" or sited in? And just totally miss? You hear the gun, the guy picks up the pace a bit, but nothing hit. We were just watching a spotting camera, right? At some points, it doesn't seem like those crosshairs were what was being aimed at, but at other times it does.

It's like the first time they were way off...you even hear one of them say "truck" seemingly because they fired and wasted some rounds and were way off...perhaps alerting those guys down there (but they really didn't react like you and I would at gunfire, obviously a common sound)

According to Shaw...the video in these choppers comes straight from whatever system they are accessing at the time...FLIR at this point. Also, the gunner was using the wrong Aiming system, these guys were quite possible at the edge of their range. After he switches to auto-sight, you can tell that the crosshair doesnt line up exactly with the baddies...they have to lead them a little. I also think they are far away, because these guys have no idea where they are being shot at from, this is evidenced by the fact that the fool under the big truck didnt just park his bootie there.

From his POV, that must have been a very dark area and he just heard a distant popping and watched his bad guy buddies blow up.

And yes, it does seem video gamish...its freaky and scary how real it all is though. :(

Edit: No I dont mind you editing me. :)
