Bewildered April 11, 2008 Author Share Bewildered Member April 11, 2008 am I the only one that finds XKCD somewhat less than amusing the vast majority of the time? He can be rather obscure at times. As a litmus test, see if you think this one is funny. If not, I'd get that checked out. You can do this one in every 30 times and still have 97% positive feedback. JackieChan April 11, 2008 Share JackieChan GC Alumni April 11, 2008 409's xkcd made me laugh because I remember reading that Calvin and Hobbes comic. That's what I instantly thought of once they were going up that hill.

dwEEziL April 11, 2008 Share dwEEziL Member April 11, 2008 I remember the C&H downhill pontificating (borrowed the word from a post by anonymo in another thread) but I didn't think of it until I saw them in the last panel.
boiler April 11, 2008 Share boiler Member April 11, 2008 ok the bobcat one was funny. I understand the programming references they frequently make, I just don't deem them worthy of more than a light chuckle most of the time. I have an open mind though and am willing to give it a better go though. *How can you call off the wedding when you just bought your dress? I hope you left the tags on there... .... I'm keeping the cake and the cat though.

Specifically the sadly poignant xkcd comics are what make it brilliant for me.
Bewildered April 11, 2008 Author Share Bewildered Member April 11, 2008 Just so ya know ... you should always right click on the image and choose properties, then read his actual title. No clue why he doesn't put that as a caption, but it often adds a new funny to the cartoon.

LoveForPriscillaChan April 12, 2008 Share LoveForPriscillaChan Member April 12, 2008 to fill in on all the non-CS folk, compiling is the process of turning your code into a language the machine can understand; in practice, this incldues linking (just treat this as more magic) and usually this process can take a long time; for example, one codebase that i build daily takes around 2.5 hours to build so whenever you have to build something, there really isnt much to do except sword fight somebody i hope that is clear
dwEEziL April 12, 2008 Share dwEEziL Member April 12, 2008 Or put more simply...compiling is taking the code you wrote (i.e., basic .txt file format) and changing it into an executable program (.exe).
