I'm getting mine at lunch too!

IGN gave it 10/10, which I believe is the first 10 for a console game from them since Soul Calibur on Dreamcast and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

MUST PLAY NOW!

*We really need to get some open world mulitplayer goin after getting through the story!

If you can make porno in the US and sell it in the US, this game shouldn't even pop up on anyone's radar.

:( It's actually out of stock at the Best Buy downtown where I work (they had a midnight launch). Their sister store, Future Shop supposedly has copies available and they are directly across the street (I know, it's dumb). I'm going now!

Personally I think people should still be responsible for what their kids get. I have no problem if people want to play this type of game, but doing this sort of stuff, even in a game just isn't appealing to me.

i agree completely

Sex does sell but wouldn't this game sell itself without it? I mean after all the previous GTAs.

I picked up my pre-order copy at lunch and got 30 minutes play time before having to go back to work. Impressive visuals and detail thus far!

BTW, on the topic of the sex stuff, that's such a small part of the game. There is so much more to it than that, which is why I enjoy it. You can probably play through the whole game without having to pick up a prostitute or have sex with your girlfriend and still have a great time. I don't play or enjoy GTA because of the sexual themes.

GTA is meant for mature adults who have a sense of humor about things and can draw the line between real life and a video game. From what I've heard (and seen in my brief 30 min play time thus far) the story line in GTA4 is a little less callous and makes you think about the consequences of your actions a little more instead of just laughing off some of the more pointless violence.

Bottom line, I know this is a controversial game, but it would be nice if this particular thread was just for people that have played it and want to share thoughts/give a review. The "GTA debate" has been hashed out soo many times (including in these forums) that I think it's not worth going over again here.

i totally agree with what you're saying.

pc gaming is dieing

being that console gaming is the most boring form of gaming ever.

lol what? someone is jealous that they can't play GTAIV

The game is unreal. It feels like GTA has always felt since GTAIII except much much more realistic. The sounds, the effects and definitely not least the physics/animations are just incredible. Just getting into a small head on collision feels uncannily real, the people in the other car go flying into their windshield (go flying out of it FlatOut style if you're moving fast enough) then either go unconscious or get out of their car to harass you.

You can choose to "off" your targets on some missions or show mercy on them with supposed consequences (haven't played long enough to see any).

Your cell phone while you're in your car makes your speakers do that weird electronic interference noise when you get a call or a text message...which was weird because I kept thinking it was my phone ringing! I need to change the ring tone (which you can do).

Fire hydrants. Oh jeez these are awesome. Knock one off with your car then walk over to it and it tosses you about, just like it would in real life...have I mentioned how amazing the physics/animation system is? (ragdoll is now officially dead)

I spent the first half hour of the game just watching TV in my apartment...GTAIV TV is 1000x better than IRL TV.

Boiler we need to try the multiplayer...

Boiler we need to try the multiplayer...

Werd.

I spent a good chunk of time with it last night, and I agree with everything you mentioned. The physics system is amazing in it's real-life accuracy thus far. So many little details that have caught my attention, and I'm sure I've missed so many more. It truly acts like a living, breathing city with people living their own lives. I stood outside my crappy apartment after watching some TV (caught the "I'm Rich!" TV show, GTA TV is great) and watched a rear-end collision happen at the stop light. All passenger's heads snapped back against their headrests, then the guy in the front car got out of his car, walked over to the guy that hit him and started yelling at him, which resulted in a fist fight. I also accidentally ran over someone on the sidewalk with one of my poor handbrake turn attempts, and watched a lady near by whip out her cell phone and call for an ambulance, which arrived a minute later.

The change in the physics engine has definitely made driving an adjustment too. You can't just use the handbrake to fly around every corner in a piece of crap taxi, or else you will spin out completely and take out 2 lamp posts and a fire hydrant. I did that once in a Sentinel, only when the car was sideways I hit a curb which flipped the car into the air and rolled it twice, lol.

I have run into one scenario where I could choose to kill a guy or spare him - I spared him, because the guy that wanted me to off him was a complete tool and I just wanted to tinkle him off.

I also got a kick out of the fact that if you smash up your car pretty badly then get out of it, the next time you get in and have to start it, it can take three or four times for the engine to turn over. Happened to me when I was trying to escape from some guys who were tinkled that I tried to jack their buddy's motorcycle. It didn't end well.

Haven't had to use the cover system much yet, but it seems to work pretty well.

** BTW, I fail to understand how some people can say console gaming is the most boring form of gaming ever or if it's not on PC then it's obviously a piece of crap. Are you serious? How can you call yourself a gamer and not be able to appreciate/be tolerant of everything that console gaming has to offer? I'm not saying you have to buy a console, but it's pretty ignorant to say console games are boring. Seeing as how I enjoy playing on my console much more than my PC right now, I'd say your statement is false. I spent 70+ hours playing Mass Effect through three times. I wouldn't call it boring. At least in my opinion, a lot of the best games that have been coming out have been for consoles (at least initially, some get ported to PC after the fact). GTAIV has a long and engrossing story line that will probably give me 30 hours of enjoyment, after which I can spend countless hours doing pretty much whatever the heck I want. Then I can IM Mo and tell him to hop in a helicopter so I can RPG him from on top of the Statue of Happiness :D

Not to hate or anything but so far you have 33 hours of counterstrike logged on GC and thats just since the stats were reset. Now I know you have easily logged more than 70 hours of counterstrike game time. I know personally for myself I perfer computer games over console but thats partially because I haven't invested the money into any of the new consoles but I have played alittle bit on all of them. Some games are better on the console like COD4 in my opinion. I've played on both and I would rather play on a 360 or a PS3 then computer.

It all comes down to personally preference on whether you like consoles more or PC.

As far as pc games dieing out thats a bunch of BullS***. When that happens hell will freeze over too.

I agree, it is personal preference! I haven't played 70 hours of CS mainly because I just started playing again a few weeks ago. My point was how can someone completely write off console gaming as being "the most boring ever"?

Case in point here: I play 360 more than my PC, however I specifically bought the Orange Box for my PC because I prefer it there than on a console, just like I would prefer any GTA, Madden NFL, CoD, etc. game on my console.

PC gaming is not going to die out. I still plan on building a beast of a gaming machine sometime later in the year perhaps.

*update*

I played a little more during lunch today, and one of the missions required me to steal a cop car and chase someone down. During the high speed chase, I rear-ended someone really hard and the engine on my car died> Niko kept turning the key saying "Come on.... start.." and things of that nature. It eventually started again, but I had lost the guy by then.

In the previous installments, your car would always keep running no matter how hard the crash until it caught fire and exploded. I appreciate little touches like an engine dying after a really hard crash (my car had taken a fair amount of damage prior to this incident). It adds to the realism and immersion :D

Seems like the engine dying on you is more of an inconvenience than anything else.

Do they have some kind of fast travel thing in case you're on a mission that requires you to be on the other side of the city, then suddenly you fail then you have to go allll the way back? I know there's something like that in a taxi, but is there any other way? That was my biggest frustration in GTA:SA.
