PvP experiences

Seeing as though we are mostly all in a PvP server, we will have some experiences with other players in the game that will make you feel great or upset... If you have a really good story of an experience that happened to you in the game whether you won or lost please post it up here, would be cool to hear some good PvP stories...

So I'm in the caverns under Tortage (whatever they're called...can't remember) at level 18. I come across this level 20 who eyes me as I enter Akasia or whatever the area is called. He doesn't do anything, just watches me. I run around for a while until getting into a fight with some NPCs, next thing I know my HP is dropping, then I die. Guess what, I got ganked. Hmmm

So I return to the area, need to finish this quest and I'm not one to be deterred by gankers. So as I enter Akasia again I'm immediately attacked, but from where? I dons on me that he must be hiding in a corner so I go around slashing everything, only to find him in the corner shooting me with arrows. It's around this point that I realize that my attacks aren't doing anything, at least when I hit the "1, 2 or 3" key, no actions. So this guy ganks me again, with easy, since I wasn't fighting back. So this really tinkles me. I finally realize that I must have some how switched the hotkey section to section 5 (which has nothing bound to it) so I switch it back and run back in to teach this punk a lesson!

When I return he's waiting for me, same corner, still hiding. This time it's different. This time I'm not going to noob out hardcore! So I run in and give him a Feint attack and a string of combos, which rattles him down to under half his HP. At this point he hits me with a stun effect and runs off, nancy! It didn't seem to last so long so I'm quickly after him. In the next room I discover him in the corner again, hiding. I do this by taking a few arrows (he must have been a ranger, I never checked).

So he has me down a 1/4 in HP. He stuns me again and hits me a few more times with some well placed arrows, I'm really hurting. As soon as I break free (he hasn't closed in at this point) I run out of the room and into an adjacent room, where a level 15 is doing not much. I run into a corner and rest immediately and watch as this guy comes running in after me. Here's his biggest mistake, he tries to gank the level 15 (must not have noticed me resting in the corner). So he engages the level 15, with me waiting right behind him. The level 15 makes a valiant effort, taking almost half this ranger's HP away and just as he's about to take his final blow, I jump in behind the ranger and unleash every combo I have.

The poor level 15 didn't last much longer but he got a first row seat to watch me slice and dice like a champ. The level 20 went down with a gurgle of blood and tears. T'was fun!

That is FANTASTIC, mo. And considering you were 2 levels lower, you held out pretty well.

Try to engage rangers up close... they're in trouble if you do. And run around them a lot, it's hard to track with a bow if you're constantly behind them.

With that in mind, it is NOT a good idea to tick off a halfway competent ranger. I can't think of a class better at harassing players. Feast your looking orbs on this story:

So I'm just minding my own business, picking up a new quest. Doo dee doo doo. I'm reading the text, and GANK! I couldn't get out of the cinematic... no text showing, I'm just getting hit and I die. As I die, I break out of the cinematic, and see who it was. So I spawn nearby, and he comes up to the spawn point ready to harass me again. I stealth and get outta there, and he stealths too. I think he was a barbarian, and level 34 while I was 39.

So I find a good hiding spot and rest up, and stealth back to the original location. He's just hopping around looking for other people to gank. He goes after someone else presumably in a cinematic, so I unload on him and he drops. He sends me a nasty message - something about how he owned me and he's 5 levels lower. I told him I was in a cinematic, but that didn't seem to faze him. So I see him by the res point, and he stealths. I turn on tracking for him, and see him come up behind me. I stealth when he does, b/c he was most likely going to attack me. So he just stands there, not knowing what to do. Then he starts walking around everywhere looking for other people to gank. Well, I was going to have no part of that.

Another handy trick Rangers have is the ability to lay a trap while stealthed. So I'd move up right on top of him, drop the trap (it breaks his stealth, but not mine), then unload on him again. He drops again, and he sends another nasty message. This time it was something about how I should give up playing on a PvP server because I suck so bad. :P

So I reveal one of my secrets to him... I know where he is when he's stealthed. He didn't believe me, so I told him he was hiding by the chickens. He said there were a lot of chickens nearby. I said "what about the ones near the signpost? :P" He had enough of that, so he goes behind a wall (most likely thinking I couldn't find him there) and does /camp. Well, the thing about that is that you break stealth when it happens, so I unloaded on him again and he dies before logging out. Have fun logging into a dead character, ganker. :)

Is it not good logging into a dead character?

So I have had almost the same issues or slash events. I find when I get into an area with a lot of gankers that I make my minons go after the gankers as they attack the others and then stealth. Now 50% of the time the run off and so I just let the minons chase them until they are dead and cast some more. Now if the start attacking the minons then I stealth into the trees or something and start hitting the crap out of them with ice storms and worms. LOL Now the fun part is when people see my minons attacking a NPC and I see them looking for me or where I am stealth because they will follow them back to me and try and find me, so I send them off to attack another NPC. Now if they are still waiting to find me then it is go time. after the second attack and they are waiting I send them after them, and if they are silly enough to stand there and attack then it is go time and out comes the ice storm.

Now with my Necro I can not defend myself when I am engaged in combat with a NPC and get ganked behind, then it is game over.

P.S. I was ROFL when Dragon was playing with me the other day and my minons went to attack her and she is just standing there giggling about how it tickles...LOL Felt soooo demasculated.

P.S.S. Also on the other hand I have had two maybe three realy good experiences with people who ask to join me or I ask to join with them and it is a great experience, and everyone is very nice. I really just want to get a level 80 and go wander around killing little gankers...

Yeah! Me three!

So I was playing this morning at work (still there, just don't think it's right to play all day) and was trying to decide where to put my new feat points after hitting level 28. I'm taking my sweet time when all of a sudden I start getting attacked. I panic and go through a few menus, flail around wildly and altogether suck at retaliating. I had about 1/4 of my hp left when I finally got my act together and swung around to find my attacker, a 34 something that could use magic and an axe (female BS? I dunno). So, while cursing this level 34 I run and hit her with a feint attack (provides me with temporary invulnerability while lining up other combos) and deliver a pretty potent string of combos ending with my brush aside combo which sends her flying. Considering I'm next to death and she still had just over a 1/4 of her health left, I take this opportunity to run. She follows trying desperately to finish me off, but just couldn't hit me with anything. I was lol'ing so hard because now my neutral health regen is at 42% and I'm quickly regaining my strength. When I was back at 3/4 hp I turned around to let her have it and to my dismay, she had run away. Oh well. I'll get her some other time.

Friend from my guild in GW wrote a lot about the PvP system... there's a thread about it

http://kbtw.servegame.com/smf/index.php?topic=1116.0

but I think

The combat system isn't very good for PvP because to pull off a combo(or more commonly known as an attack skill in other games) you pretty have to stand still while you are doing it. I guess it kind of work when 2 melee beat each other to death honor-style, but when talking melee Vs casters, ultimately the caster is just going to run away or step back making you instantly fail/miss your combo.

Basicly the system is slow and clunky. To pull off some of the later combos, you have to hit your target several times in a specific other so that the skill actually triggers and it's just not going to happen unless your target is dumb and decides to stand still. Since there is no auto-attacking and everything is done manually, including following your target, it just doesn't work very well.

I think the combat system is fun in PvE as it can be quite spectacular and more engaging to play with than most other games. But in PvP, where people are actually going to try to kite you, it just becomes frustrating as the movement and combat system is simply not fast or precise enough for fast paced PvP. The fact that you can't use combos while moving basicly means that the only way to pull off a combo is to Knockdown the guy or hope that he is going to stand still for you.

There is a way to make proper positioning and movement important without making melee combat so clunky and frustrating. Funcom's combat system fails in that department and Guild Wars is still the King of PvP I'm afraid.

and later on someone puts up some replies for what people in her AoC guild thought of his response

Walls of text ftw! :D

The person who wrote that either: never played AoC ; sucks horrendously at AoC ; or played a very out-dated version of AoC.

But really it sounds like they got ganked one too many times.

Now, Allanon, read the topic and don't post unless it's relevant. :wavey:

Now, you gonna come play with us?

Agreed... that post is very inaccurate. You have to stand still for your combos? o rly? I must be hax0rzing when I start the combo, move/dodge, continue the combo, move/dodge again, and finish the combo.

And what's with people trying to avoid combos? I'm sick and tired of their so-called "survival instinct". Just die already.

I'd like to agree with Mo and ask you to try the game for yourself, but I think your mind is already made up. I don't think you'd enjoy it because you seem to carry a heavy bias against it, and only look for ways to show how bad the game is. :)

I think this game just requires more skill and thought than most mmos... This combat system gives a unique experience to both PvE and PvP and the way the combos work is just fine... I know a few times I'm running after someone to finish them off, hit a couple keys while I'm running for a combo and then when I'm right behind them hit the last one off and they die... I don't think you're friend has played this long enough to have a say on the combat system, I don't think anyone really has...

Getting back on topic, there was another one last night. Mo was attacked by a ranger (mid-30's level, I believe). I was close by, so I offered to escort him around. I was able to track down the ranger, who stealthed and tried to sneak off. I kept tracking him, and he kept sending messages like "you're the worst ranger I've ever seen!" I knew I couldn't kill him, since he could perma-mez me and trap galore, but I could definitely run him off. So I told Mo to continue what he was doing, this ranger wasn't gonna bother him anymore. And sure enough, he went to the rez point, mezzed me, and zoned. A few minutes goes by, and he sends a message saying he's back in and he's going to harass Mo again. I check the player list, and he's not in the instance. So I call him out on it. And he says "I'm out of tracking range, lol", to which I respond "I'm not using tracking to find that out, lol".

I think it was about 1.5 hours before he came back into that area, and he never messed with Mo since. :)

Wanted to post up another one...

I just got into Atzel's Approach (a level 60+ area) at level 58. I'm grinding a little to get up to level 60, and happen to run across Bigfoot (a guildie). Then Acku runs up (another guildie). So we all group up and do a little questing. Evidently it was a grinding area another guild wanted, so we're in the middle of a battle and they jump us! 4 people, ranging in level from 60-63. Bigfoot is 63 and Acku is 62. They immediately went for Acku, since he's the Tempest of Set. While they were attacking him, I was able to drop one of the 60's. His 61 buddy saw that happen, so he went after me. I pin down + heartseeker (hardest hitting combo I have) and take about half his health. But by that time, he's at me and attacking. Bigfoot finishes off another guy, but not before Acku dies. So Bigfoot comes up and pwnzerizes the 61 hassling me. By this point, I'm at maaaybe 10% health with the potion running. The last guy, a level 60 soldier class, is then after me. I kite like crazy, pinning him down, trapping, etc while Bigfoot is beating away at him. Each hit brings me back to about 10% health, so one of his combos would take me down. So after about 3 minutes of that (soldiers take a LONG time to kill other soldiers), the 60 goes down! Woot! We were outnumbered and outlevelled, but they were outskilled. :P This was probably the biggest rush I've had in the game yet.

Can't wait until we're all in the same area/level so we can have more fights like this.

I have no clue what most of that meant, but I wanted to say it's good to know you're keeping your pimp hand strong.

My pimp hand is of moderate strength. I still get owned by some people.

All of my stories are about revenge though... that's what it seems like. For example, yesterday I'm fighting a boss 3 levels higher than me, and two people stop by and watch. As soon as I have the boss down to about 10% health, they gank me so they can get credit for the kill. The nearest spawn point was about a 5 minute run from there, so that was twice as annoying.

So I stealth back there, not expecting them to be there. But they were! Evidently they didn't get credit for the kill, so they were waiting for the boss to respawn. I open up on one of them, and they drop before they get to me. I then start attacking the next person, who just realized his buddy just died. He starts heading towards me, but this other guy comes out of nowhere and attacks him too. So he dies, and the guy (a HoX in demon form) thinks I'm easy pickins. I am, but not to his class. So I book it out of there, stealth, and he runs off. I tell him my beef was with the other two people, and not him. It turns out he was waiting for the same boss as I was, so we grouped up to take down the boss. woot

After we kill the boss, he drops group and attacks me! Betrayal! So I snare him and head off. He thinks I'm gone for good and not interested in a fight. So as soon as he gets some range, I pin down and unload on him. He dies on the way back to me. I told him it didn't have to be that way, but he said it did.

What about the rest of you? Any other good stories?

Your team buddy choice are wack!! When i choose a buddy we do a nice hard quest that we both need and maybe run around and do another. When we are done we find it hard to let each other go we have grown so close, but in the end we both had known it could never be more then it was. :(

But really, I have only got into a group like 5 times, four of them great.

The one not so great was with a Omerta guy (hmmmmmm), we had like 6 of us going into Sanctum and we got to the end guy and he says okay pin him down and we all lay into him. Okay so I am ready (still only like 36 at the time BTW) we the guy who had the quest runs up the ramp and I think ohhh no he is in trouble so I go to help. Bad choice because now I am being chased and knocked to hell from this thing. In group chat I getting yelled at to stop running, but if I do this thing is going to kill me in like 3 seconds. So I finally do and get killed. So I am hoping for a res or something, but instead I get a message that I am kicked out of the group. NO Res, No points for the boss and they just leave. Was not happy, I even sent a message to the guy leading the group asking what the deadl was and NO answer....
