I'm in the minority that likes the 3rd movie. I prefer it to the 2nd, but the 1st is still the winner by an order of magnitude. The first one was a great sci-fi/adventure movie that actually kinda made you care about the characters, think maybe just a little, and managed to keep the plot coherent and paradox-free. Plus at the time the special effects were pretty outstanding (I don't know if they held up so great). Plus the idea that the future was controlled by sadistic, heartless killing machines, while not entirely original, played perfectly into my teenage sensibilities. For me, the second movie was always just special effects porn, with a loud obnoxious soundtrack, plot holes, and a truck load of horse hockey about teaching a terminator to luuuuuv. blech. Plus the kid who Played John Conners... oh my. I WANTED him to get killed. Prolly shouldn't make the audience hate your protagonist. The third had a reasonable plot, better fit the nihilistic tone of the original, made Ahnold the good guy in a reasonable way (relative to #2), and brought us up to the robot apocalypse pretty well.
