I hear www.newegg.com has a few parts they are trying to sell to someone... :freak3:

But you just wait, the instant Preacher sees this he'll bombard you with his *FABULOUS COLLECTION OF CRAP* that he has accumulated and will trade for a semi-used pair of socks or something ;) (<3 preach)

In all seriousness though, there have been a few guys recently selling all/parts of comps in the Buy/Sell/Trade section recently, someone may have something.

However, for a fairly modest price you could just build a new one with lower-tech/cost parts. Any idea what your working budget would be?

I've got a 250gb Hard Drive I'll sell ya for $55. It's brand new, works just fine. I bought it to dual boot with Ubuntu only to find out my mobo and video card don't play well with ubuntu.

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16822145087

I'll even pay shipping.

bah.. use debian :) Im being forced into using Fedora right now. I hate it, it reminds me of ubuntu to much, but the thing I like best about ubuntu is that it is basically the user-friendly version of debian.

Im sure ubuntu will work fine with your pc. and you don't need two hard drives either...

step 1. http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php Get the Gparted live CD. Works just like partition magic, except better and free.

step 2. Install your favorite version of linux on that partition.

step 3. Having problems getting to the login screen? Do a couple of internet searches and it will make this easier, but get yourself to the command line.

edit your //etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Instead of telling it to use your Nvidia drivers, tell it to just use Vesa and it will work fine.

edit* You want to use vi to edit the file "vi //etc/X11/xorg.conf" vi isn't the most user friendly program to use. you have to press i to insert and "shift+;" then "wq" to save :)

This should get allow you to use ubuntu just fine until you decide you want to use nvidia drivers.

a bunch of stuff about why Linux still isn't ready to uproot Windows as the OS of choice

yep.

 Yeah, scary enough I have done that (when I ran Red Hat, then later when I ran Fedora) but too much trouble. I did see a neat device that lets you hook up multiple (two or three, I can't remember) hard drives and choose which is the master at boot. That way, you can have a Windows HD and a Linux/Painful HD, no dual-booting, no nonsense, all at the push of a button. They happen to use those and imaging software at the continuing ed. lab at the University of Georgia so they can run classes essentially back-to-back with multiple OSes for each class, and they can apparently blast images to the spare HDs even while the other one's in use. Pretty neat stuff.

I am actually out of stock on any quality used parts for PC building. Boiler gives me a hard time but almost everything I post up gets sold or traded to someone. Please tell us your budget for the new PC. I'll research and find the best stuff for that money. Also let us know your current config so we can see what is usable out of that :).

Edit: I do have one round IDE Cable (bright Green) and a decent All-in-one printer/fax/copier in my fosales

Come to think of it, I have a Sparc 2 I was going to recycle, but I'll be glad to part with. I'll even pay you $10 to take it. Of course, even without the monitor it's a heavy beast, it'll probably be near $100 to ship everything...

But I think I had Solaris 8.x on it last time I booted it.

I'll even throw in an extra EEPROM with a battery, it's been sitting on the shelf for about two years so it should be in good condition, but no guarantees.

sorry preach, I mean it only in good fun. :D

I laugh when I look at the extensive list of stuff you have collected and are now selling. I'm sure your wife appreciates your efforts to not have closets full of the stuff just sitting there though ;)

700 is a bit of a weak budget for a gaming system.

you have to give more info. what do you have currently that you don't think is sufficient and what is it not sufficient for?

There ya go a fairly decent Direct X 10 system for $689 including shipping and Vista Home Premium. You will of course need keyboard, mouse and monitor. If I were you I would save up about $1200 before taking the plunge and get at least a C2D 6600, GF8800GTS or better video card and 4GB of RAM. I would also go for the Vista Ultimate, but the added features may or may not be something to spark your interest enough to pay $90 more.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16856110071 (I added the 6600 in combo)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150172

and another set of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820231087

Plus upgrading to Vista Ultimate 64bit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16832116215

comes to a grand total of $1,162.60 including shipping

Well I don't tell people what to buy, but if you are going AM2 you are really buying old tech.

I absolutely hate the case, I know a bunch of folks on here like it but it's so plain that it wouldn't be in my house. If I was going to go plain I would prolly go plain black like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811112139

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814122025 Better video card for the money (I'm an ATI fan too, but ATI hasn't made a good priced DX 10 card yet and if you are going to go with Vista, you need a DX10 card so you aren't left behind tech-wise)

RAM is good (dealing with mail in rebates ugh), CPU is good (for AM2)

I read about their quad core CPU back before C2D came out but haven't heard anything recently. I don't remember if it was supposed to be based on the AM2 socket or if new tech will be required. I guess we'll see. If it was going to be released really soon, Cujo or ZD would prolly post about it lol

it's a while away still and even then the early reviews aren't so great. also, socket am2+ will be needed to exploit some of the new features but the cpus should be backwards compatible to socket am2.

honestly, going am2 right now is a big mistake. intel is so far ahead right now it's ridiculous. any p35 chipset board will take intel's next gen 45nm quad core parts as well as current duo and quad parts.

I agree with much of what is being said here, and I'll post up some Intel-based recommendations in an hour or so to fit your $700ish budget :D

btw, there is nothing wrong with a "plain looking" case if that's your thing (it happens to be my thing too). I have that very same P180 and I absolutely love it. Simple, understated, sturdy, well-built, quiet, good cooling. Sounds like a winner to me!

Ok, this is a bit of a challenge since it's a pretty tight budget and we're going for most bang-for-the-buck. Two comments before I give a suggestion list:

1. No one has mentioned/posted anything regarding a power supply. I'm assuming that you will need a new one to go with this new system. That hurts the bottom line, of course, but you definitely do not want to skimp on the PSU.

2. I absolutely LOVE that Antec case that you seem set on as you have mentioned it more than once, but it is very expensive and is eating up lots of budget space. If $700 is a pretty hard number and you COULD get away with using on older/cheaper case until you can afford the P180 later, then I would recommend it. There's going to be give-and-take with a tight budget in order to get the most power/value for your money.

Ok, here's the list I have come up with. I will include the P180 case in the pricing to show what it would take to include the case with the parts I have listed. If you made mention of other parts in your previous posts, I tried to use them where I could.

Antec Performance One P180 Silver cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail - $129.99

ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - $126.99

Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 Conroe 1.86GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail - $165.50

OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail - $129.99 (before $50 MIR)

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $67.99

Antec NeoPower NeoHE 550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply - $109.99 (before $30 MIR)

EVGA 256-P2-N761-AR GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card - $174.99 (before $15 MIR)

Grand Total w/o Shipping: $905.44

Ideally, this would be a pretty darn good setup for the money. Also, you would be getting $95 back in mail in rebates, although that would take a while.

Areas where you might be able to save a little money:

1. Case - I covered this already, but you could save nearly $100 (when taking into account shipping) by going with a cheaper case or one you already have.

2. Processor - you could switch out the E6320 for the E4300 Allendale and save about $50. Both overclock pretty well, but the extra L2 cache would be worth it in my opinion.

3. Motherboard - there are some cheaper options with P965 chipsets, etc. out there that would work as well, but you won't be saving a ton of money. Realistically you could save around $20 maybe. I tend to lean toward ASUS for quality reasons. Keep in mind newegg still sells a number of intel socket 775 boards or the cheaper variety that will have issues with the newer core 2's, at least without BIOS updates.

I do NOT recommend trying to change out that power supply for something cheaper. That Antec PSU will last you quite a while and will only end up costing about $80 after rebates. Again, do not skimp on the power supply or you very well could regret it down the road and cost you more money. I have that same power supply running an E6600 and 640MB 8800GTS in that P180 case, and they all work great together. You would have some wiggle room down the road power-wise.

With regards to the graphics card, that's a pretty good price/performance card that should give you plenty of power for today's stuff and also work as a DX10 entry for you as well. I would recommend this over the X1650pro you linked to above. The 256MB-512MB memory difference shouldn't be an issue at all unless you are running on a 24" monitor or something.

CONCLUSION:

Your budget is not far off from a pretty darn good DX10 capable system. If you can compromise on the P180 case, I see no reason that you can't stay within $50 of your $700 budget right now and still get some really good parts. Also keep in mind that if you could swing the price now (with or without that case) you would eventually be getting back almost $100 in rebates. For the record, it took me about 10 weeks to get my rebate check from Antec for my P180 case.

It would also make a big difference if you already have a PSU that could handle the load for now until you could upgrade to something like the Antec NeoHE series.

Give me your thoughts on all this then it can be adjusted as needed. Hope this helps ya out!
