Kruten October 17, 2006 Share Kruten Member October 17, 2006 Western Digital My Books seems to be pretty good. One with a Firewire connection would be nice, but that's only if you have a Firewire port somewhere o your comp.

appalachian_fox October 17, 2006 Share appalachian_fox Member October 17, 2006 Nice setup, Cujo. That'd be a fantastic home setup. I was going to ask if Laz had a laptop, which would limit his connection to USB 2.0, but you can't really save that much money by going down, you'd get a lower quality enclosure and you wouldn't have the eSATA with which to expand. Lunk October 17, 2006 Share Lunk Member October 17, 2006 I got one of these last month. Mines the older one. This one is the newer version. At first I wasn't all that impressed with it's speed. So, I let it sit for a couple of weeks. I went back to it and now I'm quite happy with it's transfer rate. Guess it needed to burn in or something. It's nice to have a networked storage hd. That way I don't have to leave any one pc on all the time to access it.
Metallurgic October 18, 2006 Share Metallurgic Member October 18, 2006 I have always wanted a network drive. Can they also be used as a standard external with USB ore Firewire? That would be ideal. As for me, I use a Western Digital 160gb external, and it works very well. It has the dual backup feature, but i've never used it.
HWarrior October 19, 2006 Share HWarrior Member October 19, 2006 My current portable solution is AMS Venus external enclosure and 500gig Seagate. If you don't need it portable, and have an old system laying around just turn it into a network drive. Hide it behind a desk & hook up to a router. My oldest comp is doing that job with 512MB Ram & 10/100 nic and about 1TB (3 Seagate 320s) for only $0.25/gig.

EbilDustBunny October 22, 2006 Share EbilDustBunny GC Alumni October 22, 2006 I also reccomend the Western Digtal: My Book. I have a 500 gig it's very awsome. I don't use the software that came with it but it's very nifty and dummy proof. If you are looking for speed They just came out with a 1TB book. It's a monster that can do RAID 0 or RAID1.
