30 some dead at VA tech... What's your view?

It's a sad day... The word shocking doesn't even come close to describing the shooting in VA today.

 

The real motive for the shooting is still unknown, but for now, it seems like a young male (student or ex-student of the school) just lost it and went on a shooting rampage. What drives one to such extreme is anyone's guess since the killers usually end up dead.

 

I've been brought up with the idea that watching TV, especially violent shows, influence the way we act in real life. Needless to say, I thougth that my parents and their generation were over-reacting. I'm 38 and I remember silly stuff like kids jumping off roofs because they saw it done on TV (for those old enough to remember - Six million dollar man - lol).

 

Columbine is an incident that comes to mind when we talk about this issue.

 

I don't mean to sound old, but I'm feeling what my parents were feeling when I was young.

 

My question to you guys:

 

1. Do violent/graphic materials from media and games desensitize the way we feel and act?

2. Knowing what you experienced while growing up, things have changed tremendously with New technology, themes, etc. What do you think the future will bring?

First off I wasn't there, don't know any of the victims and I haven't been shot at recently. That said I find it unusually distasteful for folks who had nothing to do with this to use a tragic event to spout about what their views on society, politics or whatever. My parents grew up watching westerns and gangster films where people were constantly being shot or shot at. My parents generation would have completely lost it had something like this happened 50 years ago. I think that violence is brought on by a severe lack of morals in the upbringing. We live in a day where we have child porn advocates lobbying in Washington, people spitting on the families of dead soldiers at the funerals and crazies blowing themselves up along with regular folks in schools and markets in the name of alah and calling it a war (no real agenda that makes sense though). With all this insanity topped with a justice system that says nothing is your fault because it was either your bad childhood or your new mental disorder - in fact you are the victim even though you committed the crimes. How can anyone make sense of this type of tragedy and how on Earth can you say that it directly points to video games, tv or even the kid's GF dumping him. This dude was bad and it's a darn shame he wasn't hit by a bus last week. Nothing like this should happen but it does. Mark the tragedy and morn with the families of the lost, it's all you can do.

 

 

Edit: I wasn't aiming this at anyone here, but at the jacktards on TV. Just wanted to be sure I didn't come off as sounding like I was attacking S*H*O+O*T lol

We all grew up on first person shooters, why can't our kids? He didnt do this because he played counter-strike. He did this because that girl cheated or went out with another guy. That guy had a class in Norris that morning.

 

Im 99% sure that is how the story is gonna go down.

Ladies... If your dating a loner kid from South Korea, please don't cheat on him.

I don't believe media can be wholy responsible for a person's mental breakdown, it is also their upbringing and their environment that shapes their psyche. Then again some people are just born with a few nuts lose regardless of how they are raised and anything can set them off.

If you cannot tell the difference between fantasy and reality, I highly doubt not playing video games are going to solve your problems. I'm also with preach on this one. I hate all those policital/TV figures that exploit these events for their own personal gain.

That girl didn't cheat on him. He never had a girlfriend. He was stalking her. Maybe he was jealous that she had a boyfriend.

The details aren’t online yet, but here’s the gist: he stalked three girls on the floor they lived on, including via instant messages he signed with a question mark; he once told his roommates that when he looked in one girl’s eyes he saw “promiscuity,†shortly after which they sent him to a counseling center on campus for a few nights; then, at some point after he was released, they went out drinking and he opened up to them, telling them he had an imaginary supermodel girlfriend … who called him “Spanky,†and whom he called “Jelly.†Oh, and he also liked to listen to “Shine†by Collective Soul over and over and over.

CNN doesn't know their music. I watched that interview and the roommates said he listened to Collective Soul and Shinedown. Those are 2 different bands. Yet, somehow they concluded that he listened to the song "Shine" by Collective Soul. I guess they didn't screw up entirely since Collective Soul does have a song called "Shine."

What a blowhard. He has no facts or evidence to back up his claim, only some vague comments from unknown individuals. Yet he gos out and claims that he knows the truth behind the killing. Forget about the mental issues, family issues, history of persicution from his classmates. Its all because of a game that he may or may not have played. Ridiculous.
