I'm a lineman at Cinergy. Lineman= climb poles or operate bucket trucks and play with high voltage power lines.

Do you get people who are afraid of hights?

Uhhh.... actually Cowboy, one of the requirements for the job is that you have people who are not scared of heights.

During the physical tests when applying for the job,one of the requirements is to climb a ladder that is attached to a 75 foot pole. Climb up to the 35 foot mark and step off the ladder onto a shorty board ( a little fiberglass board that is attached to the pole that about a foot wide). Then once that is done successfully you climb to the 50 foot mark and do the same thing.

I have seen guys do this during testing, some get about 15 feet up on the ladder then turn around and come back down. And some others will climb up to the 35 foot mark, but not step off onto the ladder. At that point there is no sense in going through the other tests because they will not get the job.

But like many people say, they are not afraid of falling, just the sudden stop at the end.

Here's a couple of videos I though some of you might find interesting. It just gives you an idea of just how much power is harnessed through electricity, and sadly, it is a risk that we have to put up with when things go wrong on the job.

Click - this is what happens when you get a hot phas to ground on 7200 volts

Click - this is what could happen when a transformer fails. It is not as likely with most transformers around cause they have a fuse setup to kill the power when it senses a fault. But this particular transformer is a 480 volt transformer, and with these transformers they don't sense a fault, is senses a demand for more load, so it just keep pumping more power to it until it.......... well, you'll see.

Click - and this last one I just find funny as heck, it is a simulated poletop rescue on a dummy, but after watching it you kind of wonder which one was the dummy.

Wow, I love that cloud of black smoke coming off of that burning transformer! YIkes! And you think that guy hit the ground falling off the pole? Did he have a safety harness on? I'm up on high ladders and stuff oo being a cable guy.. hanging off the cable and phone lines :) W00t!

I make sure people like BGB don't get hurt. I'm a Health and Safety Specialists at MWH, one of the largest environmental consulting firms. So you boyz up on dem ladders you might want to think about some fall protection. It only takes a couple seconds to lock in. Well enough of that.

And speaking of jobs, you guys keep me in your thoughts/prayers. I am applying for a new position in my company and would very much like to get it. It pays about 40 cents less an hour and the overtime isn't as high, but the perks more than make up for the difference in pay. I would have a company vehicle and not have to pay a dime in gas. I would get a new laptop every 2 years. The work isn't near as phsically demanding as what I am doing now, nor would I have to deal with the weather as much or the insane callout hours. This job would give me more time with my family and open up more time for me to return to some college courses.

So wish me luck!!!!!

Well, I may or may not be hearing about that job soon. They had 314 applicants and have chosen 17 to interview. 2 districts are hiring a person in this position, so I don't know how many, if any, of the applicants are wanting the position in my district. But if I am one of the 17 then I should be recieving notice in the mail within the next week or 2. I've overcome bigger odds than this before though, when I got hired on as a lineman there were 1,356 applicants for the position, so it was kinda like hitting the lottery. Keep your fingers crossed guys (and gals).
