I know I responding to an OLD topic but heres my two cents on the zombie horde. When I was an NBC-WMD specialist in the army someone asked a colonel what was the US militarys plan on how to deal with a localized plague, virus, bacterial weapon (zombie infection and alien virus's werent in the list lol but it would fall under the same general guidelines) etc,. First, martial law would be declared and a general state of emergency issued. National guard units would be called to federal duty to surround the "infected" area. Second, guys like me, the NBC specs, would start stocking body bags, incinerators, nucleur-biological-chemical decon equipment and then meet up with a few infantry and mash units and set up a base of operations and quarantine perimeter. We would get debriefed by military and civilian personel on what the situation was and what weapons to get ready. Third, recon nbc vehicles and aircraft would be deployed to test for chemical or biological agents, ie the whatever that created the zombie horde. Rescue of civilians would be attempted as soon as a secure perimeter and plan of action is verified. MP's would be assigned to arrest/detain/shoot looters and others of low moral character. A lot of this you see in movies like "Outbreak" and "Dreamcatcher" are what the military would actually do in this case. But since we were dealing with the zombie horde, it would only be a matter of time before they would overrun quarantine zone perimeters. Im skipping some things. Last but not least, the option of a wide area (not smaller tactical nukes like in the train howitzer seen in "Return of the living dead) nucleur strike may be the presidents only option. Of course it may be just as easy to "shoot them in the head" if their the Shaun of the dead zombies and not the remade Dawn of the dead ones. Remember and feel rest assured by this. There is no such virus or bacteria that kills its host and then reanimates them into dead human canibalistic, homocidal lunatics. Only crack and herion does this lol. :D

The best weapon in a situation like this one would be a katana or some kind of strong bladed sword. Don't get me wrong, but guns would be a bad choice against a horde of zombies. You'd eventually run out of ammo.

Now, if I found myself surrounded by zombies, I'd just spin in circles very fast cutting anything that comes near me :P

I'd get as few friends as I could. Easier to keep track of them and will know if they succumb to the zombies.

If I had a choice on which kind of zombies to have coming after me, I'd choose the zombies from the movie "Shaun of the Dead". Mainly because they seem to be to be not as dangerous comared to some movies like Resident Evil.

i'd take guns swords bats sticks katans knives and type of weapon i can and find a couple friends...

next i'd suggest we find a chokepoint wher the zombies hav to cross if they want to kill us or spread the disease...and i hav plenty of food and water and stuff in my house to keep my alive for a long time...

I agree with the stout blade arguement. Although I would like a shotgun and a nice rifle with explosive rounds to back me up definately a Katana would be the highest priority on my list of weapons to get. I mean sure you can shoot em alot but you dont have to worry about running out of ammo with your katana. And if you have the skills it wouldnt take too long to take down a good 100 zombies. And if you could create some kind of attack from the blade that was ranged (like u see in anime) then who needs a gun? Heh just swing and watch them all fall in a nice little line. I mean just look at Onimusha he doesnt get a gun till later and he does just fine.........

Hah, you reminded me of a trick used with something with weight attached to a rope or chain. You twirl it around and kick it off your foot to send it flying. Reason why it reminded me of it was because I can do that trick :D

I have one. It's what would be called a nijitsu katana or a ninja sword. It's about 50 years old and I've used it for hacking 3-4" trees with one slice lol. I guess, according to you guys, I'm full prepared for the zombie invasion now.

Has anyone thought that maybe they wouldn't be slowed down by missing parts? The swords might be less usefull than a footlocker full of frag grenades.

you guys are freaking me out lol i just saw dawn of the dead about a week ago and it is also taken place in my home town so that is even worse lol!!! i would take my 12 gauge pump shotty and shoot all that I could then i would give someone my 22. cal semi auto rifle with scope and shoot there heads off.... and i would take like a 30 06 and blast there heads off too.... lol this would be all from a sniping spot like a school roof or a something like that!

But frag grenades aren't practically available.

Here's what I'd go with:

1. Clothing: Thickest protective clothing possible, preferrably with pockets to hold water & energy bars. Safety goggles too (so my glasses don't break in times of combat).

2. Ranged weapon: low-caliber scoped/laser sight rifle (something a little more powerful than a .22) and as much ammo as I can carry.

3. Second ranged weapon: laser sight hunting bow with stocked quiver

4. Melee weapon: aluminum baseball bat with shoulder strap.

5. Short-wave radio/CB.

6. Collapsible/portable tree stand.

Justification for:

1. it'll be hot, so I'll be sweating. Water is necessary for hydration. Thick clothing = armor, less chance to be infected by a bite.

2. bigger isn't necessarily better. The report isn't as loud in smaller caliber weapons, and the recoil is smaller (better aim for repeat shots, less shoulder pain). Also, lighter = easier to carry.

3. arrows = reusable.

4. the bat is light, yet sturdy. Also, a zombie would be incapacitated in 1-3 hits (1 for a head/neck hit, 3 for both arms and the neck/head). Lastly, it could be used for entry to some buildings.

5. necessary to communicate/learn about other survivors.

6. Sleep is necessary, so I'd climb a tree and stay there (if no other locations are secure). If zombies collected around the tree in the morning, I'd use my bow to dispatch as many of them as possible, break as many bones with the bat as possible, then hopefully clear a path to jump down, turn around, and finish the rest of them off.

You could also use a backpack to carry the water and ammo you are going to need. Carrying it in your clothing would just slow you down (obviously).

Most swords sold on the market today are for display only -- meaning they wouldn't last long with actual use. How many of you have swords that are labelled "battle-ready"?

About 7 of em :D

you forgot PCP and Meth - them are the two scary ones.

Knew I forgot somthing! :D

You also forgot all the protocalls not mentioned about acceptable losses and contagion control. Like when Hemoragic fever broke out in Cambodia in 1996 ;)

There are no acceptable losses. And as for contagion control, that is the purpose of the security perimeter for the quarantine zone. Theoreticaly, nothing biological can really be contained and theres also the possibility that you dont find the "patient zero" or the carrier that carries the virus but is not efected by it. The last year I was in the NBC corps the movie 28 days came out. That peaked the attention of a lot of people in the Centers for Disease Control. They are now planning new protocols for a similer situation. Id pray that they were Shaun of the dead zombies myself! :D

But just for the sake of arguement, would they just eventually decompose? wouldnt we just be able to hold out at a secure location long enough till they all stopped moving? they would be dead afterall? or would that be too convinient for a movie? It takes a couple months for a body to decompose in the open right? or does the virus or whatever regenerate them? lol guess thats why its only in the movies! :D

Priority 1: Prevent the chance of Zombie bites/scratches. Acquire armor quickly. Wear two sweaters and two pants.

Priority 2: Survive for a long period of time. Food/Water/Shelter away from zombie hordes. Island or boat is optimal but a steep mesa or elevated building with no ground level entrances will do.

Priority 3: Kill zombies. Light automatic rifles such as carbines or submachine guns are optimal for maximum damage/mobility/accuracy. Shotguns and pistols may lack stopping power at long range, therefore they are unsuitable for a cohesive perimeter defense. As close range personal defense weapons shotguns/pistols are effective. Swords/clubs/knifes/spears are probably ineffective as even the sharpest sword is unlikely to cleanly decapitate an enemy on the first swing. If animals are immune to zombism then it may be prudent to enlist the aid of hyenas or other large predators to take down the zombies.
