Bunch of jerks

Well after finally getting everything set up and ready for cs, including buying a new flat screen monitor and posting the gf's old comp half way around the country, I've found out that the jerks who run the college internet won't allow online games.

Not only that, I can't click on the link that allows me to download the TS2 client, and also after managing to install it, it wont let me to connect to TS2 servers.

Xfire doesnt work, i cant connect to my xfire account at all.

i cant connect to steam either.

all this has been tried and tested in two different rooms on two different comps, so i guess its just the internet people being jerks. I wrote them a hefty e-mail so they better respond or im going to be so annoyed. Its taken so much effort to finally set it all up aswell :(

If they don't let me play my cs, i'm going to have to take cs into the real world. I'll dress up as a sas dude and kill the people that run this college internet system. GRRRRRR :bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

I don't get what it is with some schools and the bandwidth. Some like yours won't let anyone play games, but there are lots of others that have huge pipes and don't care what you do with them. If I were you I'd see if I could find a game that could run on the LAN without going outside to the Internet.

Yea mine had good bandwidth. But people were also using Napster at the time and it was becoming a problem with pirated music and porn being downloaded to school computers. Even if you use your own computer the network belongs to the school. There have been a few lawsuites against schools for loose net use policies. Might have to do what we did and just pick a room put some in laptops/desktops and make your own lan games. The school did allow us to do that. :D

The thing that annoys me the most is the blockage of x-fire. I dont see how they can block the use of x-fire and still allow people to use msn and aim etc.

So, what 1 player games do you guys recommend? I may go back to playing age of the empires, because that game rocked!! But it rocked more whilst playing the online version, so i'm off to check that out.

You could come to college at UGA! The net admins are all pretty cool here, as long as you're not running a fileserver of some sort. They shut down bandwidth hogs pretty fast, and they have perimeter security now (finally) that will stop you from serving on pretty much any port outside the network, but you can get out no problem...again, as long as you aren't an idiot and abuse the sytem.

Plus we have teh hot ladies.

I know what you all mean. I have been without CSS since the 1st of august. The college is now giving us a chance at playing but if the bandwith gets to laggy they are going to cut us out again. So i should be on later tonight, hopefully.

my college filtered several p2p ports but allowed game ports. They were very strict about disallowing internet game servers but allowed us to have lan servers/games.

I would be willing to hazard a guess that your net is run by a bunch of guys that really don't understand how to block certain ports and just don't know enough to do it all (hey, I don't either). So their solution is to just block everything. That or some up tight penny pusher has decided to cut costs everywhere and thinks games are a waste of time.

Get people organized and start getting attention (the good kind). You may be able to get them to change their minds about such a strict policy.

Or you could just get cable internet in your dorm :P

It keeps telling me that the server is offline. I don't know if the server is actually offline or if this scan is blocked. I'll try again tonight and tomorrow just to double check.

I can't really start a petition or anything to get these jerks to let me play. This is england, i doubt half these people have ever heard of counter-strike, let alone want to petition to allow it to be played on the college internet.

And thats one of the reasons why I can't see a problem in me playing the game. There may be like 2 others in the whole college playing it so its hardly going to take up any bandwidth :(

Bah the scan is still not working, I guess they have done something with that too :bang:

I'm going to have to go down to their office and have a long chat with them. I wrote a really long e-mail the other day asking them to refer me to the relevant part of their site telling me where I can find out about what they have blocked.

Surely if they don't specify anywhere on their site and an information CD that your not allowed to game online, I have a right to complain?

I pay money to live in their halls, I'm sure some of that money goes towards this internet, so surely I have the right to play a game for a couple of hours on it :boo:

I've been playing with bots today and its just not doing it for me :twitch:

i believed i had this problem too. Teamspeak was blocked on my world ip, by my lan ip works for people on the same network, so you can use it for your dorm building, try using the 2nd ip it gives you, usually 10.6.5.131 or something smaller, not the 66.75.131 or so.

i can play online most all games, except Age of Empires 2, and it drives me nuts. Also i can NOT play source on a lan, maybe i dont know how to make steam work on a lan? i tried figuring that out before here, but to no avail, always says invalid steam ticket.

try opening up ports via windows manually or try turning off your firewall, check to see which game uses which and specifically let those open.

best of luck.

I only know two things about this port thing:

i) There something to do with the internet

ii) If you rush the boat you'll always win

Apart from that, I'm not really that educated. So doing it through windows is also a no go for me without guidance. This is the first thign I've heard about having two IP addy's

My only option now is, as saris said, to bring my M4 along to my meeting with these network admins!

hm...  let see, would a proxy server be any help here??  There is a way to get around the firewall

Well, you might need 2. Have one proxy listening on the port from your computer (inside the firewall) which can then talk to a proxy outside the firewall (via an open port) which can then flip the request to the proper port for steam.

Course it would be slower and getting a proxy on the web won't be easy.

Rofl, ok I just had a conversation with some guy in my seminar group today.

Bigb: "Dude, I'm so annoyed. I just spent £80 on a new monitor and I cant play this game online"

Friend: "What game?"

bigb: "A game called counter-strike, you heard of it?"

Friend: " Yeah, we've been playing it in our halls for a couple of weeks"

bigb: "WHATTTTT?!?!"

Friend: "yea we changed our IP and now play on some small lan with bots"

w0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000t.

I live in the block opposite from him, so hopefully this thing can be made bigger, and extended to my block. I'll probably have to chat to the guy who set this up and understands about all of these things and see if he can work anything out"

see that's where Canadians rock.... Our school couldn't care less if we play games. My friend had a server going a few years ago while he was in residence.

It's nice cuz our school has LAN parties every so often on the school machines (P4's) so it's nice, all they do is reboot the machine and Deepfreeze whipes everything back to normal. Simple as that.

At my college and pretty my any college i know of in florida... don't allow the downloading of music and stuff like that napster, kazaa, and other things are pretty much blocked and/or if you get caught they will pwn you. lol!

There's a away around it... so you can play CS, but they'll know eventually and if they aren't lazy they will block it and you'd just have to find a new door.... :shrug03:
