Hello,

Is it possible for third parties to download things onto my computer via programs like bearshare, limewire, utorrent, or just access it by the fact I have the internet? I've found some unwanted files that I have not given permission to be on my computer in the hidden system files whilst searching for things on my computer.

I have a wireless internet, but its WAP protected so surely people can't access my computer through that without knowing the code?

I dont have anything too personal on the computer, just holiday photos and a few phone numbers of friends. Is it possible for these to be shared?

I'm particularly worried that if random things are being downloaded, what happens if in the future racist/peadophillic content starts appearing, although I totally wouldn't allow this onto my computer. (not that this is severe as the above example)

What action can I take to prevent things getting into my computer? I did a spyware search (21 things found), virus (1 virus found) and adware (30 things found), i have windows firewal running :S I've had things like p2p programs and bittorrent before and this has never happened, besides, I've only downloaded like 1 thing off each program - nothing excessive.

Please help,

bigbones

i don't run antivirus or antispyware and have a wireless router with built in firewall and i don't get any weird files on my system. how do you know those hidden files aren't supposed to be there? usually the way unwanted things get on your computer are off unwanted sites or ppl clicking without reading what they're saying ok to or ppl e-mailing crap to you.

any time i don't recognize a file on my computer i do a google search for it and see what comes up.

short answer bones: yes.

For example, that virus you found may be the culprit.

Also, take note of what the files actually are. Somethings are jsut there to speed up your net.

If your at one site whilst there is an ad in the side column for booby-palace, youll prolly have a lil booby.gif on your pc somewhere that your browser saved so you can load that page faster nexttime. Simple stuff like that too.

Yeah...this happened to me a while back when I used bearshare (evil program). Maybe you're using a really outdated version that had some serious security issues...or just found a trojan belonging to someone with a sick mind. You really have to be careful...my gf found this folder on my PC and came to me all freaked out and angry..."I can't believe you have all this animal porn on your PC...who are you!??" Oh man...that was a bad day.

Why? Did she make you delete it ? :) hehe :freak:

MAC address filtering >WEP ..try it

MAC spoofing is trivial with a sniffer. WEP cracking is possible, especially with older versions, but it still takes time. Anyone who has the tools to crack WEP has the tools to spoof a MAC address and should be able to do so far more quickly.

The best option between the two is to use both.

boot into safe mode and de-spyware and de-virus, first.

download and install firefox2.

go wired. if you can't, spend the money on a wireless router with wpa-psk2. it's the best you can get, for now. turn on mac filtering, and just for fun, turn off your ssid beacon.

stop using p2p clients. download utorrent from http://www.utorrent.com.

scan anything you download from less-than-credible sources (e.g. anything you download "for evaluation").

reread what cujo said for future reference.

I agree, but that's not exactly an option if the range of options is WEP and MAC filter :peace:

It also doesn't stop people from downloading things unwittingly -- that's a user error, PEBCAK
