w8t4time November 30, 2006 Share w8t4time Member November 30, 2006 6+ inches of snow for chicago a foot for milwaukee thats what the news said last night I am going to research now and see what the experts are saying ok a very technical way to say we are not sure ahahhaha --------------------------------------------------------------------- http://iwin.nws.noaa.gov/iwin/il/discussion.html AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO/ROMEOVILLE IL 616 AM CST THU NOV 30 2006 .DISCUSSION... ...FIRST MAJOR WINTER STORM OF THE SEASON TO AFFECT NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA... UPGRADED MUCH OF NORTHERN IL TO A WINTER STORM WARNING WITH AM ZONES/GRIDS. IN THE SHORTTERM...COLD FRONT SOUTHEAST OF THE CWA WITH RAIN ENDING FROM WEST TO EAST. HARDLY ANY REPORTS OF FROZEN PRECIP WITH SFC TEMPS STILL ABOVE FREEZING ACROSS MUCH OF THE CWA. WHEN TEMPS DO DROP BELOW FREEZING...PRECIP WILL BE OVER. HOWEVER...PRECIP IS EXPECTED TO HANG UP ALONG AND SOUTH OF I-80 THIS MORNING AND AS COLD AIR CONTINUES TO FILTER IN...COULD STILL BE A MIX OF FROZEN PRECIP THERE. THERMAL PROFILES SUGGEST ALL RAIN ACROSS NW INDIANA THRU MUCH OF THE DAY. SO HAVE CANCELLED THE WINTER WX ADVISORY FOR ALL AREAS EXCEPT ALONG AND SOUTH OF I-80 AND WEST OF I-57...SEE COUNTY LIST BELOW. EXPECT MUCH OF THE DAY TO BE DRY WITH JUST LOW CHANCE POPS ACROSS FAR NORTHERN IL TODAY. MODELS CONTINUE TO TRACK A LITTLE FURTHER WEST WITH EACH RUN WITH THE TRACK OF THE SFC LOW TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING. GENERAL AGREEMENT ON COORDINATION CALL WITH HPC AND SURROUNDING OFFICES THAT THE ECMWF TRACK OF THE SFC LOW IS PREFERRED WHICH IS A LITTLE FURTHER SE OF NAM/GFS. THIS WOULD BRING THE HIGHEST SNOWFALL TOTALS ALONG AN AXIS FROM ROUGHLY ST. LOUIS TO JUST SOUTH OF THE CHICAGO. HAVE SHIFTED THIS JUST A TAD FURTHER NORTH WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS ACROSS THE SW PARTS OF THE CWA. AS WITH ANY WINTER STORM...THE TRACK OF THE SFC LOW WILL MAKE OR BREAK THE CURRENT SNOWFALL FORECASTS. ENOUGH WARM AIR AFFECTS INTO EASTERN PARTS OF THE CWA TO INTRODUCE A MIX OF FREEZING RAIN AND SLEET THRU NW INDIANA AND SLEET INTO EASTERN IL WHICH WILL HOLD DOWN SNOW AMOUNTS. IT IS ACROSS THESE AREAS...GENERALLY EAST OF I-57 THAT THE WINTER STORM WATCH WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT AS UNCERTAINTY IS GREATEST ABOUT MEETING WARNING CRITERIA THERE. WITH THE THREAT OF MIXED PRECIP...WILL GO WITH A WINTER STORM WARNING AND MENTION THE POSSIBILITY OF MIXED PRECIP. THIS WILL ALSO ALLOW SOME FLEXIBILITY WITH LATER FORECASTS AS THE EXACT TRACK...AMOUNTS AND PRECIP TYPES ARE PINNED DOWN. CURRENT THINKING SUGGESTS A STORM TOTAL OF 6 TO 10 INCHES ACROSS PARTS OF THE CWA. IMPRESSIVE OMEGA SEEN OFF THE MODELS...THIS HAS TWO IMPACTS... SNOW FALL RATES MAY REACH 2 TO 3 INCHES PER HR AT THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM AND THOSE RATES WILL LIKELY COOL THE COLUMN ENOUGH TO WIPE OUT ANY CHANCE OF MIXED PRECIP. THESE CONDITIONS LIKELY TO OCCUR IN A VERY SMALL BAND AND IT IS JUST TOO EARLY TO TRY TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHERE THIS WILL OCCUR. WINDS WILL ALSO INCREASE TONIGHT WHICH WILL CAUSE ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS TO VISIBILITY AND BLOWING/DRIFTING SNOW. HOWEVER...EXPECT SNOW TO BE HEAVY/WET...AT LEAST FURTHER EAST CLOSER TO THE TRACK OF THE SFC LOW WHICH MAY LIMIT BLOWING/DRIFTING POTENTIAL...BUT ANOTHER FACTOR TO MONITOR WITH THIS STORM. LITTLE TIME TO FOR THE REST OF THE FORECAST THIS MORNING...SNOW TAPERS OFF LATE FRIDAY MORNING INTO FRIDAY AFTERNOON FROM NORTH TO SOUTH. HAVE DROPPED HIGHS/LOWS OVER THE WEEKEND INTO NEXT WEEK WITH ANTICIPATED SNOW PACK...THOUGH PROBABLY DIDN/T GO LOW ENOUGH.

Peckles November 30, 2006 Share Peckles Member November 30, 2006 We typically have snow from Oct/Nov-March, roughly, but we've been known to have freak snowstorms in May, and even Augus. But yeah, for the most part, our snow is here to stay for about 5 months each year.

Goofus Maximus December 2, 2006 Share Goofus Maximus Member December 2, 2006 (edited) We got freezing rain, sleet, and snow here. The power lines took another hit, but we got power back after a day (sort of) It's been flickering on and off a lot today, though. Some of the 520,000 homes in the St. Louis area won't be getting power back for 5 days from the time of the storm. Fun is having no heat in the house, with temps dipping into the low teens outside. I spent the day wearing a housecoat over a sweat-coat (with hood up, and muffler around my neck) over a sweater over my thickest long-sleeved shirt, over thermal long-underwear. I was surprisingly comfortable like this. I wonder if I've been wasting money by running the furnace.... VooDooPC December 5, 2006 Share VooDooPC Member December 5, 2006 It was 63 degrees on the 30th of November, 39 degrees on the 1st of December, 37 in the 2nd, 30 on the 3rd and 25 yesterday with a few inches of snow. I can handle warm weather and cold weather, I just can't handle them both in the span of five days.
